PS3 game loading times

I mostly play PC but I do have a PS2. Anyway question is:
1. I assume PS3 games(like RPGs especially) are either a lot more seamless, or they load larger chunks of games so that you don't have load very often. Yes?

2. When playing PS2 games on a PS3, do they load faster?

1. PS3 does a good job streaming games to the HDD so content is buffered. It's slower than PC but it does a fairly seamless job. Depends on the game though.

2. No. At least as far as I can tell. My phat PS3 and the PS2 slim I replaced it with seem to load at the same rate. Both use the same hardware, BD drive notwithstanding.

2. No, it's identical as far as I can tell on my PS3 60GB. Also, no recent PS3s can play PS_2_ games at all, they only play PS_1_.

I haven't tried any of the PS_1_ game downloads from PSN (and you can't either until next month :( ) but they may load faster than playing from CD since they are stored on the hard drive.

Of all of the consoles, the ps3 almost always has longer loading times, most noticeable in comparison of cross platform games. It's not a great deal slower than the 360 in most cases, but it's measurable.

Unfortunately with all the consoles being ram-limited, streaming can do only so much. It depends greatly on the game, but in the end the blu-ray drive in the ps3 just isn't a fast drive. Most games force an install prior to the first playing to compensate.

Even loading entirely off an SSD on a hacked console doesn't improve load times as much as you'd think though. The bottleneck seems to me to be CPU decompression of the assets on disc.

In either case, loading just about any game is way, way slower than from a proper gaming PC.

The PS3 loading times also have a lot to do with who programs it. Some of the companies do a really good job (for example God of War), and some other companies do it in a really bad way (e.g. Marvel Ultimate Alliance).

Can anyone recommend any good story RPGs for the PS2 that don't have terrible loading times? For example: I bought bard's tale and it sucks because you load every time you enter even a shop and you have to load for every battle. Final Fantasy 12 on the other hand has much less loading and doesn't force you to do a load for every battle. Since I play mostly PC, except for those 2, and other Final Fantasy games out on PS2, the entire PS2 RPG library is unplayed and new to me. Thought I might buy a few cheap used games but not keen on loading heavy games.

Do you plan on playing those PS2 games on a PS3? As someone mentioned earlier, PS2 games do not run on any PS3 systems except for some of the old fat models, like the 60gb fat model.

No, on my PS2, since a new PS3 wouldn't be able to. One game I saw on Amazon that looks interesting is Star Ocean Last Hope International. how's that one?

That's a PS_3_ game, but I haven't played it yet.

Persona 3 FES is a great PS2 JRPG and the load times never bothered me.

Doh, I meant to say Star Ocean - Til the End of Time. I've got all these games in a huge list of favorites to browse when I have the time, lol, gets confusing.

Xenosaga 1 is another very good JRPG, if you don't mind watching some long cutscenes.

I haven't played the PS2 Star Ocean games yet either.
