I'm sure it has been asked plenty of times, however I cannot find answers from this year. Does the PS3 currently emulate PS2 games?

If not, can you recommend me/point me in the right direction to rip my current PS2games to play with an emulator? Do PS2 games get recognized by a PC DVD ROM? Every so often I get an itch to play Castlevania SOTN, FFVII, FFVIII, and others, but don't want to do a big investment to do so, and my PS2 (5500 series)is dying. Thanks for looking.

The PS3 does not emulate PS2 games unless you buy a BC model which are somewhat hard to come by.

The games you mentioned are all PS1 games though and the PS3 should play those games fine

PCSX2 is the only good PS2 emulator AFAIK. It runs most games pretty well. PS2 games can be read by a PC DVD-ROM drive, but you're much better off ripping the .iso file to your hard drive instead of playing them direct from the disc.

But yeah, all those games are PS1 games. . . every PS3 can play those :)

I've never had much luck with it. The games I do have are playable, but not smooth. I suppose it needs a powerful system to work. I guess my Phenom II X3 doesn't cut the mustard anymore.

The PS3s with BC never emulated PS2 games. The original 60gb and 20gb actually had system-on-a-chip PS2 hardware. The 80gb emulated the Playstation 2's CPU, but retained the physical GPU. Going that route caused a huge decrease in compatibility. The 60gb is compatible with 99% of the PS2's library. The 80gb dropped to 80%.

You can still buy brand new PS2s. Sony says they'll keep making them as long as people keep buying them. And people are still buying them.

I wish that Sony would make a PS2 that upscales games to 1080p and has an HDMI port... or just put a PS2-On-A-Chip on the Slim PS3 now that it would be cheaper than dirt to do that.

The current PS2 slims are basically a PS2 on a chip. EE+GS+RDRAM in a single die (IOP is still seperate but likely only for PS1 compatibility). But why give that away when people are still willing to pay $99 for it.

Honestly the only game I've used it for was Final Fantasy XII International. It took a massive amount of tweaking and goofing around with plugins, but I finally got it working really smoothly. It looks awesome at 1280x720 with 4x AA.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll try the emulation on my Q6600 rig this weekend. My release xbox 360 died for the 4th time, and I'm done with MS consoles forever(overall I spent ~3yrs without a working console since I got it). I was thinking of picking up a PS3 and maybe a few current games to replace the 360, and would like to replace my PS2 at the same time as it has been erroring more frequently. If I can just use my gaming PC anda PS3, I'll be happy. Thanks again all.
