Reguardless of the projected ship date, the thing I found most interesting was the estimated price of $800. Now that may be from the "pulling a price out of my ass" camp by the author but I'm sure it has to be based on something. I have a feeling that something is the brand new Blu-Ray drives that will probably cost sony $100 each compared to $20 each microsoft got the DVD Drives for.
I'm sure sony knows $800 isn't going to fly with consumers for a gaming console, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

A better move for Sony would be to launch the PS3 with a modular DVD drive, and when they need the extra space and when they get the kinks worked out of Blu-Ray, they could sell a Blu-Ray drive separately as an add on. That way they could get the PS3 to market quicker.

thats pretty much exactly what microsoft is doing with the 360 and hd-dvd drive.
This would be a bad move for Sony. They want to have Blu-Ray in as many homes as possible, as soon as possible. The best way to do that is to include it in the PS3. They stand to make a mint if Blu-Ray is successful. That's why they are willing to take such a hit with the initial price of the PS3. They know they can't price it for more than $500 or so, but it won't matter, because they will recoup the lost in a couple of years, when production cost have fallen, and the Blu-Ray bucks start rolling in.Originally posted by: JackBurton

Sony knows any release date after the holiday 2006 season would be suicide for their system. Holiday releases will generate buzz and sales that a January release simply won't.
