There is no way that Sony will release a product right *after* the holiday season. About 50% of all toys sold during the year are sold from october-Christmas. If you miss one holiday season, you wait until the next. You want your product to have all the "new" hype during that buying period.

either way xbox 360 will drop in price by then. Making the Launch price of the PS3 non competitive.

I didn't see in the article where it pointed to 2007...although I do think late 2006 will be likely. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out. Maybe a Fall launch in Japan and 2007 spring launch here in the states.

While the Japan market is going to be tough to really get their hands around...I think Microsoft is getting a pretty good chance here to really put a hurting on Sony's market share. I've been more than happy with my Xbox 360/Xbox Live and I'm feverishly looking forward to games like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and Gears of War.

I've even got my non-techie girlfriend playing the Xbox 360. And Xbox Live is a blast. I'm the 4th person in my office who purchased an Xbox 360...3 of us for playing games...one guy just to use as an HD hub for his Media Center setup.

I always like to see good competition in markets where I really enjoy the end products.

Yippee for gamers.

A better move for Sony would be to launch the PS3 with a modular DVD drive, and when they need the extra space and when they get the kinks worked out of Blu-Ray, they could sell a Blu-Ray drive separately as an add on. That way they could get the PS3 to market quicker.

Reguardless of the projected ship date, the thing I found most interesting was the estimated price of $800. Now that may be from the "pulling a price out of my ass" camp by the author but I'm sure it has to be based on something. I have a feeling that something is the brand new Blu-Ray drives that will probably cost sony $100 each compared to $20 each microsoft got the DVD Drives for.

I'm sure sony knows $800 isn't going to fly with consumers for a gaming console, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I believe the $800 figure is how much it will cost Sony. If that is true and Sony is able to release it at the $500 price point, they have 2 problems.
1) It's still too expensive.
2) Losing $300 per unit is WAY too much for Sony to lose.

thats pretty much exactly what microsoft is doing with the 360 and hd-dvd drive.

except Microsoft never plans on game content being published using these new discs...just the ability to watch the HD-DVD movies that will be released.

This would be a bad move for Sony. They want to have Blu-Ray in as many homes as possible, as soon as possible. The best way to do that is to include it in the PS3. They stand to make a mint if Blu-Ray is successful. That's why they are willing to take such a hit with the initial price of the PS3. They know they can't price it for more than $500 or so, but it won't matter, because they will recoup the lost in a couple of years, when production cost have fallen, and the Blu-Ray bucks start rolling in.

Sony knows any release date after the holiday 2006 season would be suicide for their system. Holiday releases will generate buzz and sales that a January release simply won't.

It will be out by at least November 06 and most definately December 06 at my guess.

No more then £500 and if it is more and it has Tekken and GT5 online I'll grab it. I'm DYING to play some GT5 online!

Losing £££ is no problem as they will sell millions of them. The PS2 sold 100million units = making Sony loads of £££. Lets hope they can do a half decent online service like Live :p. We all know about Sony and software!

The PS3 is going to be released around the same date this year that the xbox was last year.
