PS3 "Control for HDMI" option

This may sound stupid to a lot of you, but I just figured this out and thought I would pass it along for anybody who might find it helpful.

I just found an option in the PS3 system settings called "Control for HDMI" which allows all HDMI devices to control each other. I don't know if this setting has been there from the beginning or if it was a recent update, but I just decided to turn it on even though I was under the impression that this feature only worked with other Sony devices such as the Sony Bravia TV sets.

Well anyway, it works awesome with all my non sony hardware. I have a Pioneer 919 receiver and a Samsung LCD tv. My PS3 is connected to my pioneer receiver which is then connected to the TV.

Ever since I turned it on, my Samsung source control window on the TV displays an "Anynet HDMI PS3" option that didn't used to be there. If I click on the option, it automatically turns on the PS3. When I'm done playing I can just turn off the TV and it will turn off the PS3. Or if everything is off if I just press the PS button on the control it will turn on the TV and the PS3. All the while it passes the connection through the receiver while it is turned off and passes the audio and video to the TV set! I didn't know my receiver was capable of this. I have been turning on my receiver to get 5.1 audio from my system. Now if I want to get 5.1 I can simply turn on the receiver and it will automatically pass the audio to my 5.1 system instantly. Simply turn off the receiver and audio goes straight to the TV again.

Man this is awesome. I was under the impression this only worked under the Bravia sync. It's so great to have the option to turn off the receiver and still play when I need to keep the volume down or whatever. I'm sure I'm the last one to figure this out but I just thought I'd pass on my excitement for it.

yeah, every manufacture has this now. It's awesome. I can turn on my TV just by turning on my PS3. It works on my Sony and my Samsung. Now if only cable boxes can work with this.....

Cool, my setup is nearly exactly the same - a Pioneer VSX-919AH, a Samsung HDTV, and a PS3. I'm going to give this a shot. Thanks for posting - I had no idea this even existed.

My Pioneer Blu-Ray player does this with my Samsung Plasma as well. I just wish it could pass play/pause, etc. through.

This setting is not present in my system settings. Maybe my stuff isn't compatible. Do you have a fat or slim?

Only the slim PS3 has the Control for HDMI option sadly. I checked around when I got a new TV and it had the feature.

I have this and just turned it on, but as far as I can tell it's not doing anything. If I turn the PS3 on, the TV does not turn on?

I tested it last night. Turning the PS3 on does not turn my Panasonic plasma on. BUT, turning on my Panasonic plasma on that input does turn on the PS3 and turning off my plasma does turn off the PS3. So that is cool, at least.

The plasma in question is in my man cave and is a 2008 model of Panasonic 1080P plasma. I don't have the model number with me. I would assume that if I hooked it up to my new 50" G25 series, it would probably support more HDMI controls.

Try turning the TV on with that input selected and see if the PS3 turns on. If so, I'd bet turning the TV off also turns the PS3 off.

There might be something in the configuration of the TV that would help as well. I have it on an older (2008 model) 42" Panasonic plasma and powering the TV on/off does power on/off the PS3, but the PS3 turning on will not power on the TV. Nothing in the config immediately jumped out at me.

I have a new 50" G25 that is in my living room that I might have to run some tests on as well.

Very interesting that it seems to be a bit of a hit or miss. It appears that the key to my success may be Samsungs Anynet+ feature, which appears to be their own proprietary technology that mimics Sony's Bravia sync. I was assuming Anynet+ was a standard across brands.

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/l...ources/anynet/

And I'm guessing that it only supports other Anynet+ devices. Apparently the PS3 is a supported device, and I'm guessing my Pioneer receiver isn't because I have to manually turn it on if I want the audio through my speaker system.

Holy smokes this keeps getting cooler. I can actually use my Samsung TV remote to control the PS3 using anynet+. Guess it payed off being lazy and not buying a ps3 bluetooth remote! I have the exact same setup as this guy I found showing it off on youtube.

And here's a post I found by this author on IGN boards. http://boards.ign.com/ps3_lobby/b8269/189156059/p1/

Searching around online it looks like a lot of people are doing this. Strange that I have never heard anybody talk about this before though.

It looks like this is actually a standard called HDMI-CEC which each company calls their own name. See this post here.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/...t-and-the-PS3-slim-what-is-that/td-p/45426743

So those of you without Samsung TV's shouldn't give up hope. You may have another way of enabling it. From Wikipedia:

Trade names for CEC are Anynet (Samsung); Aquos Link (Sharp); BRAVIA Sync (Sony); HDMI-CEC (Hitachi); Kuro Link (Pioneer); CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba); RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo); SimpLink (LG); HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, and VIERA Link (Panasonic); EasyLink (Philips); and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi).[84][85][86][87][88]

Viera Link sounds familiar, I think I had set that up earlier so that my TV remote would work my bluray player. I'll check it tonight.

Cool, my TV supports Viera Link and it is enabled I believe. I'll have to see if some of the functions on the TV remote work on the PS3, esp. the media controls.

Alright, got it. Panasonic users should turn VIERA Link on, then go to setup, VIERA Link Setup, and turn "power on link" and "power of link" to yes.

My PS3 now turns on when I turn the TV on, TV turns on when I turn the PS3 on, and PS3 turns off when I turn the TV off. The TV refuses to turn off when I turn the PS3 off for some reason, but whatever. Plus my TV remote controls the PS3 nicely, even the pause/play/stop type stuff for media.
