PS3 + Blu Ray movie = black screen (update: anyone have American Psycho?)

Update: Looks like this may be a compatibility issue. So much for the PS3 being the premier future proof Blu Ray player. Anyone have American Psycho on Blu Ray and does it play on your PS3?

I have my PS3 connected to my LG L227WTG (1680x1050) via an HDMI > DVI adapter. Games all work fine in 720p, but I just got my first blu ray movie and I'm having problems.

The intro plays fine, I get the LIONSGATE logo and then the disclaimer about opinions yadda yadda, and then black screen. I hear the drive spinning up for about 2 minutes or so until it finally stops altogether, and every so often a play button flashes in the bottom left of the screen.

Unfortunately I don't have another blu ray movie to test, but the disc looks fine, no major scratches or anything. I don't get any audio either so I don't think it's just a display issue. Has anyone had this problem before, any known fixes?

I'm too lazy to move my PS3 to the living room and test with the standard AV cables at the moment, guess I'll try that later and post back...

Certainly sounds like it could be an HDCP issue (hooray for DRM right?). A couple other things that can cause the black screen; downloading external content from the net (but it usually happens before it would play the Lionsgate logo, so that's probably not it), or a bad disc.

I just brought the PS3 into the living room and hooked it up to my TV using the standard AV cables. The exact same thing happened, Lionsgate logo, opinion disclaimer, black screen. I can fast forward during the intro but once the black screen starts every command gives me a this operation can not be performed here error, or something along those lines.

At this point I'm thinking it might be the disc, even though it has a mostly mirror finish. Guess I need to get a hold of another blu ray for testing.

Ok this is weird... I remembered I had a sealed copy of National Treasure that I got from Disney as a birthday promo and I opened that up to test it. The movie plays fine.

The other movie that's freezing on me is American Psycho. The disc is in pretty good condition so I couldn't believe it was faulty and I decided to do a search.

And I found this.

Exact same problem I'm having, and the 7th comment down here, another person with the same issue.

Sounds like it could be a PS3 compatibility error. The only problem is I got this movie from Goozex and I only have 7 days left to leave feedback. I'm not sure what I should do, I'd hate to leave the guy a negative if it's not a problem with the disc itself, but then again what if it is? The only way to get my points back is to leave negative feedback... I don't have another Blu Ray player to test the movie in.

Is there a way to downgrade PS3 firmware?

Take it to Best Buy and try it in one of their BD players - they should have one set up in the Magnolia lounge.

I have American Psycho on Blu-Ray and I have tried it on my friend's 40GB PS3 (unfortunately, didn't use HDMI cables) and it was fine!

I rented it from Netflix and it played without problems on my launch 60 GB PS3.

I wonder if there was a bad batch of discs? This was an early release.

Yeah...one Blu-ray disc means the system is fucked for life!
