PS3 backwards compatable

Was looking at the NEW 80 gig model that sony is releasing

they make this statement

You can play thousands*** of PS one® and PlayStation®2 games as well as your DVDs, CDs, Super Audio CDs (SACD) and MP3s on the PLAYSTATION®3 80GB.

ok is there a loss of picture, performance or what when you try to play ps1 sand 2 on the 3?
I tried to find some post and one or two people say they just don't look as good but didn't say what titles or all titles or 1 title.

Thinking of getting one for BD play...
the backwards compatability was a big thing to me since my friend has about 200 1 and 2 games he said I could have.

If you have your PS3 hooked up to an HDTV, PS1 and PS2 games will look better because they'll be upscaled to whatever resolution you're running. I haven't heard anyone say they would look worse.

There were some early problems with the PS3 rendering of PS1 and PS2 games. These appear to have been resolved.

I can tell you from personal experience that they look better than on the original system, too.

thank you for the info.
Now all I have to do is wait till June to get it. One person said it was already out, but to wait till june to get the free MG4. Not sure if its worth waiting or not.

I think sony made a big mess when (and this is from my searching on all this might not be correct) they made an 80G with Hardware emulation. .then then cut it to 60G with software emulation of ps2 only. Then a 40G with NO emulation.
Now back to the 80 but they have not stated if its hw or sw emulation on it.

F they are starting to sound like nvidia LOL

Almost. The 20gb and 60gb PS3s had hardware PS2 emulation. The 80gb PS3 has software emulation, and the 40gb PS3 has none. Given that you can upgrade the PS3's hard drive, the old 60gb models are still the best.

My PS1/PS2 games look a lot worse than normal...but that's only because I'm using an LCD monitor that sucks with low resolutions and scaling. 😉

Just curious, why can't they just add software emulation to the 40g?
It's not entirely software emulation. One of the two PS2 chips is in the 80gb. I suspect this is part of the reason that the 40gb can't play SACDs, too.

erwos on the new 80 gig you said One of the two PS2 chips is in the 80gb...
is this going to make it a good emulator or a so so video and slow choppy game play?

Still can't find a new 80G anywhere but Sony said they were released in April. The one with metal gear will be released in June.
But I don't really care mainly playing old games and blue ray.
