PS3 as a Super Encoder???

I read a post where a guy claimed he could encode 65 fps per core with his PS3. Meaning like 400-500 fps. He said he could encode a DVD to 1080p in 6 minutes. He said he was using PS3 Ubuntu, but I can't seem to find any tutorials or anything to back this up.

Anyone heard of this?

Nope, not true. You don't have access to all of the SPE's under Linux and its quite underpowered in Linux as well from what I've read.

I do not think so, not only are you locked out of certain pieces of hardware (as stated above), you also have a SEVERE ram limitation to deal with on the PS3. I did not even bother putting Yellow Dog back on my PS3 when it was returned from RMA.

Uh, no. There are no optimized kernels for Ubuntu that have access to all the cores. There are some optimized kernels for PS3, yes but not ones that have access to all the cores. If I remember correctly the way the PS3's SPE access is structured you can only run signed code on particular cores while unsigned code is allowed on a coupe.

The post he's talking about can be found here: Engadget

The post was made by a guy named "Zack" near the bottom of the first page of comments. He makes some follow-up comments with links explaining what he did.

If he posts a full tutorial on it, I will pay him much money

Ding ding!

The problem with using the PS3 to H.264 encoding is that the SPEs don't have the cache to store a full frame, and since they can't access main memory... well, this guy either solved an insanely hard programming problem in a month, or he's lying through his teeth. I'd put my money on the latter.
