PS3 as a Bluray player

I have been using the PS3 to watch several Bluray movies, all from "Notflix" so far. On the one hand, the picture is really csip and nice on my 46-inch 1080P Sammy, but controling the movie functions has been difficult with the game controller which came with the PS3. Yeah, it has gotten me by, but long term a controller is definitely needed.

Now, can anyone suggest some possible remotes? Am I limited to the Sony PS3 accessory remote or are there other options? Obviously all I need is something which can do the major basic functions like PLAY, Fast Forward, Reverse Search, Slow Motion, Pause, Main Menu and all that stuff. It would be nice to get something inexpensive.

I use this: http://www.amazon.com/PlayStat...&qid=1219330469&sr=8-1

Just throw away the included remote and use a learning remote, like the Logitech Harmony or others. It can do basically do almost EVERYTHING, except turn the console on (which the IR2BT Keith noted above CAN). That being said, you get 95% of the functionality of the IR2BT, with 1/4 the price. Since I have to walk to my PS3 to put in the Blu-Ray anyway, its not a big issue to just turn it on when i'm up there (or just press the PS button on the PS3 Controller before I walk up)

Seriously man, if you don't mind having another remote, the PS3 remote is great. Otherwise, get the IR2BT and use a universal remote.

While I love the feel/layout of the PS3 bluetooth remote, the lack of backlit buttons is a deal killer for me. It drove me NUTS not being able to see any of the buttons while watching a movie in a dark room. I returned it about 3 days after I bought it.

Good point. When I watch movies, its often dark or too dark to see the labels on the buttons. I'm tired of fumbling with my game controller and constantly experimenting with it to control the movie.

I think the 3rd party PS3 remote looks fine for me, and $15 shipped from Amazon. Yeah, you gotta put the disc in so having the on/off is a minor thing.

Keep in mind, the included Nyko remote sucks as it has very few features. You are really buying it for the IR adapter 🙂

If you don't already have one, pick up a Logitech Harmony remote, they ROCK. The lower end models (520/550) can be regularly found for around $50.

I would be _very_ cautious of IR2BT and similar solutions. The 2.4x PS3 updates killed all of them, and owners had to send them back (on their own dime!) to get new firmware. The PS3IR-Pro looks like it can have its firmware updated by the owner, though, so that one might be worth a look. Alas, it's $100.

Ultimately, the better solution would be a Harmony One (Two?) with Bluetooth, which could also control your Wii and PC. We'll see if that ever arrives.

I did see the Nyko remote uses up one of the two USB ports so maybe I'll just go with the Sony remote. The Logitech sounds cool but I don't feel like spending $50 right now just to get a remote control for the PS3 blueray.

But a Harmony controls EVERYTHING!

My Harmony remote even controls my dog and my girlfriend!

Well, if it does that, I'm there! Ok, gotta get a g/f first! 😛

I bought the Nyko remote for the USB IR receiver, and I use it with my Harmony remote. It works great except it's sometimes annoying to have to get up and turn it off when I'm done. I almost always switch the disc when I start it, so that's no big deal.

That is what I did. I use the Blu Wave with a Harmony One and it works fine.

Is your HDTV the Samsung LN46A550?

If so, does it do1:1 pixel mapping with an HTPC video card (I've got an XFX 7600GS) and the PS3 via HDMI?
