PS3 and SACD's?

OK, so while reading about Blu-Ray discs on Wikipedia, I read something about the PS3 blu-ray drive supporting SACD formats. But when I go read up on the PS3, I see that there is no multi-channel sound output. I've always been under the impression that SACD's are only playable through the multi-channel outs on the proper players.

So, will a PS3 play SACD's or not? Anyone have any experience? Currently I use my Denon DVD player for my SACD needs, but was thinking about selling it if I end up with a PS3. I'd like to still be able to play my SACD's.

I'd be shocked if Sony didn't include their own Hi Rez CD format (SACD) in their new game platform.

But it is Sony we're talking about here.

A lot of SACD's are 5.1 channel too. For example, my two favorites from my collection... the 30th Anniv. Pink Floyd, "Dark Side of the Moon" and Bon Jovi's "This Left Feels Right" were both offered up in 5.1 channel surround. Not all SACD's are but it's probably a healthy mix between higher-quality stereo and 5.1 channel offerings.

edit: Oh, and thanks for that link! Very helpful for me.

I was just thinking a couple days ago that I think MP3's are the first major music format trend where people are supporting a format which is a sharp decrease in audio quality in favor of the size of the file...kind of odd.

Yeah, that is kinda funny. I think in some cases it makes sense though.. like, my truck doesn't exactly have a good audio system. I can't even tell mp3's from CD's on it with all the noise of driving going on. So, if I can't really tell them apart... I'd rather make an 8-hour mp3 disc. But yeah.. like you say, people are embracing the smaller, inferior quality of the mp3's with one hand, while embracing more expensive, higher quality video formats on the other.
