hi all

decided to try connecting my ps3 to 2408wfp via hdmi today and no sound?? keeps giving error message "this hdmi device cannot be used for audio output" tried manual and auto setup for audio settings. afaik, this should work straight away, but it's not. anyone else had this prob and figured out how to get it working?

here's the setup:
PS3 CECHA01 -> hdmi v1.3 cable -> Dell 2408wfp A01 ->speakers/headphones connected to the green 3.5mm output from the monitor

Are you sure that the monitor will pass the HDMI audio through? I seem to recall reading that it cannot (though that may have been a different Dell monitor).

You can do what I did for a while...

Playstation AV cable to female to female coupler
Connect a 3.5mm to stereo RCA y cable to the other end of the coupler
Plug the 3.5mm connector into the sound bar

i've been reading some people can get it to work, some can't. no one has a definite reason why yet. =\ i mite have to try that AV method you mention... but it's definitely annoying having an hdmi hookup that doesn't seem to work.

well i'm convinced it's the monitor's fault now. either that, or i'm not hooking up the speakers correctly... even though there only appears to be one 3.5mm audio out on the monitor...

tried the ps3, dvd player, and my video card hdmi audio out to my tv and they are all outputting audio just fine.

searching the dell forums, appears lots of others have this problem unresolved by tech support (which i called today and got nowhere. they say, sorry the monitor is only compatible with dell sound bars. so i'll borrow one from work to try it out).

That looks fine. I have mine run into the my computer, with the line-in volume set pretty low. It could be related to the revision; mine is REV A00 on the label, but shows as DELA02A in Device Manager.

@dessert tears: wait, i'm not quite sure what you're saying. you get audio via the same hookup, but just very low volume? i do not get audio at all (as per the error message from the ps3).

anyway, i googled "ps3 hdmi dell u2410 problems" just to see if there were any issues with their new "flagship" ultrasharp model. guess what? lots! more related to video this time.

anyway, it seems dell hasn't got their shit together, so i won't be purchasing from them unless there is a wicked cheap deal AND problems i can live with. (i guess it's time to google hdmi probs with other 24" monitor manufacturers)

No, I mean the opposite: the output is reasonable, maybe even a little high, as the computer doesn't have to amplify it much.

I searched around and found complaints about the audio desyncing, with the suggested fix to switch away from the HDMI input and back. Since I need my computer to mix the audio, I always turn the console (recently PS3, 360 before) on first, then switch to HDMI. It worked when I tried HDMI input first just now, so mine might just work in all cases.
