From what i've read the only differences are HD size and the fact that they can't play US PS2 games (don't care about either). Hey..I can save 100 bucks doing this, so it's worth it if there isn't anything else to worry about...

Thanks

The harddrive is slower. But if you plan to switch it out, that's moot anyway.

That's all I can think of as well...but I don't think the slower speed is noticeable.

It's supposed to be very noticeable on PSN games. Gripshift is the worst offender.

Huh, you can play American Ps3 games and movies on a Japanese PS3 system? If not, WTF would you want it?

After reading up a bit I've learned that you can play PS3 games from all regions on the japanese version (so yes you can play US PS3 games on it), but not PS2/PS1 games from US nor can you play US movies either.

According to somone in Ars GESC forum, you'll also get any Japanese restrictions on blood / gore / ultraviolence in games applied.

You'll be able to play US BD since we share the region with Japan this time around.

I'm sure theres a firmware hack or something to make it work in the US. Sony is not good at security. Look at the PSP and their supposed DRM cds. :) It's all been cracked.

Nobody's hacked it yet. The PS3 is a little different because you can't do anything online unless you have the latest firmware.

You could probably play the DVD's through Linux though.
