False Alarm per Queasy

Shacknews was told by Sony that this is a misprint on the website.

Is Sony's Planning a 'Budget' $199.99 PS3?

File this under 'probably a mistake', but I've seen it with my own eyes, and you can too: A $199 PlayStation 3 posted on Sony's new 3D website. MaxConsole noticed it first, and speculates that it "looks very plausible indeed."
Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and sure enough, listed under '3D-Compatible Products' beside categories like 'HDTV' and 'Home Theater', a picture of a PlayStation 3 with the text "Starting at $199.99."
Just a mistake? Or a future post-announcement (announced at E3 next week?) template someone pulled the trigger on too soon?
No one's expecting price drops on any existing console SKUs at E3, but Sony's up against two competitors--Microsoft and Nintendo--with cheaper sticker tags. While Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite costs $300, the Nintendo Wii is just $200, as is Microsoft's entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade.
Sony's PS3 is only available in storage-differentiated $300 and $350 iterations by comparison. While either of those may offer better value in a spec-for-spec comparison, the company lacks an entry-level model of its own--one that could compete in the psychologically crucial 'price tag for price tag' column.
What could Sony offer in a 'budget' PS3? Dropping the storage from 120GB to 60GB or 80GB wouldn't save them much, so it's hard to say what they'd cut, if anything. You'd expect the controller, a USB cable, and composite video, and they can't yank the Blu-ray drive, since PS3 games depend on it. Perhaps the 120GB and 250GB SKUs would get a spec bump? Maybe the 120GB model disappears and the 250GB model drops to $300?
None of it seems very likely, given the mortifying profit losses Sony's endured trying to get its once boutique-priced flagship console cost-aligned with mass market demand.

I'm guessing typo, but the webpage hasn't changed yet.

If it were $200 then Sony probably would be bleeding again, unless they take some stuff out like the hard drive or Wi-Fi. But then it wouldn't do everything!

im looking on sonys site now and its listed as 299 for the 120 GB model

Obviously if this had officially happened already there would have been an announcement about it. I think the idea is that someone might have jumped the gun before E3...

...which begs the question as to if this is true, and if so, what will Microsoft counter with on the 360?

E3 cant come fast enough now...

Microsoft would have to drop their price. If i could go back I would've bought a ps3 to begin with. I don't game a lot and usually only play football games and MW2 now. So it really doesn't make much difference which system i use and i'm not a fanboy for either. The ps3 just has the extras built in like the wifi and hard drive. But i do like xbox live way more than psn b/c the interface is very user friendly.

I hope not--I just bought a slim.

It will be interesting to see what happens but $100 is a pretty significant price cut and the PS3 is already pretty hard to find in stores right now.

Methinks it's a typo. It'd drop $50 if anything, that big of a chunk would kill their profit margin.

Although if it WAS true and didn't have alot of hardware crippled you'd have a hard time keeping me from buying one!

This seems like a great idea if they can pull it off. Sony needs something to compete directly with the 360 Arcade, and a 40-60GB PS3 w/o wifi would definitely fit the bill. I get the feeling this is probably a pricing error or, god forbid, a pricing option for the PS Move hardware ($200 for PS Move is going to make $150 Natal look like bargain basement pricing).

Looking forward to seeing if they respond before E3, if the site's pricing just changes when they see the screw-up, or 3rd option, this is actually something coming to fruition at E3 next week.

Placeholder, typo, or maybe $199 with Sony credit card $100 signup bonus like SonyStyle has offered in the past.

Given the recent die shink and that the PS3 cost around $240 per unit to manufacture in August 2009, this seems like a very plausible move. They'd probably still be making money at this price.

If the PS3 hits $199, I'm in. I wouldn't even care if they yanked the WiFi, since I'd rather use wired anyway.

"Dear Playstation fans,

In order to get the PS3 down to it's fantastic $199 price point, we've completely redesigned the console. You know the PS3 does everything right? You can watch blu-ray movies, record music and video to it's huge 120gb hard drive, play games in stunning high definition, surf the web wirelessly, and play online for free... well... we've stripped all that out. The new PS3 super slim is a lovely hunk of Plastic with the PS3 logo on it. We think you'll love the gaming experience it offers, unless you want to play games." :sneaky:

Yeah, I'm still bitter about that Linux thing.

199$, i'm in too! just for one or two exclusives. it would shake things up big time. Cheaper Wii/360? :D
HDD and Wifi are overpriced addons, better just to DIY. Look at 360 HDD :\
Lets hope. E3 is cOmInG!

I wouldn't mind if they pulled the wifi and HDD. I'd use my own HDD and superior ethernet.

They can't pull the HD, there are too many PS3 games that require a HDD, almost all of them actually. They could throw in a smaller drive, but given that a 250GB 2.5" drive can be had for $45 shipped at newegg, I doubt it would make much of a difference. Wifi probably costs them like $5 at most to include.

Still, hoping for this to kick PS3 sales up.
