PS2

I NEED:
1. a new CD player
2. a DVD player
3. a home mp3 player besides my PC
4. a PS2

PS2 will do all of the above except play mp3's, right?

Mine, may be an isolated situation, but I've found the DVD playback of the PS2 to be pretty horrendous. The controls are extremely clunky using the controller, and isn't really any better using one of the 3rd party remotes. The video quality is pretty bad too, the picture is kind of "shaky" in that lines aren't really straight, but spiky.

Computers are so in expensive these days it is tempting to build one for the home entertainment center to run mp3's, PC games, PC consol emulators, and DVD's.

<<ps2 canot play cds! you meant audio cds right?>>

I doubt it, even the lowly PSX can play audio CDs.

I agree with you about the controller, but not with the video quality. It's better than the sharp dvd player that I got my girl for xmas. It's not as good as my panasonic, but then I have monster cables connecting it. The cables that come with the PS2 aren't worth 2 cents.

As I said Muadib, mine may be an isolated situation, but there are definite video issues with my PS2, which I am sure you would agree with if you saw it. The problem may be associated with just certain DVD's, I don't know, but they play fine in the other DVD players in the house.

Has anyone done a review on the video quality? I would trust it better if Anand did the review. Anyone else like to see him review it?

I think Home Theater Magazine or Sound & Vision did a review on it. I'll try looking for the issue somewhere in my house. 🙂

I've seen the PS2 DVD in action... from what I know spec wise it has the same inards as the 503s DVD player that I have which is sonys top of the line. But for some reason in the middle of the movie I've noticed that the video loses sync with the audio. Kind of funny actually! But I'm guessing the video quality tough guy is talking about is in fact the quality of cable he used.

Sounds like your PS2 may have a problem. Do you use it flat or standing on it's side? Which DVD do you notice the problem? If I have them I'll try them out in my PS2.

I thought the S7700 was Sony's op of the line player now?

I would also suggest the first efforts would include new cables or at checking the connections very thoroughly. Doesn't take much dirt/film or lousy material quality control to create interference in video signals.

It's not the cable. I'm using an S-Video cable and there is no image peculiarity when playing games, only DVD's.

Sharky did a decent review. Check it out here. I'm hoping that the PS2 drought continues for a while. I'd like a chance at some of that eb*y money.

Can you list the DVDs that cause the trouble? Does it play bad with the
standard PS2cable too?

My PS2 has played DVDs fine, almost as good as my Pioneer 525, but I'm not going to use it as my primary DVD player. I have the component video cables hooked up to it. Maybe it's cause I have a Wega XBR. That thing will make almost anything look good.. 🙂

Gone in 60 seconds and Perfect Storm both had problems. I didn't bother to troubleshoot the problem too much, because I basically didn't care with 4 other DVD players in the house, I was just curious to see how well it would play DVD's.

same here. i have a ps2 model 30001 i think and played "Gone in 60 Secs" and had no problem at all.. very good quality as my panasonic dvd player using composite cable it came with and the ps2 is standing up...
