PS2 Repair Fees Outrageous!

I called Sony to check on the status of my PS2. They said the optical unit of the machine had to be replaced and that the total for the repair is $119!!!

IMHO, that is outrageous for repairing a $300 game system, barely more than double the repair price! Espescially if the problem with it turned out to be a design flaw.

Does anyone have any more info about lenses getting scratched because of unstable disc holding? I'd love to have some info when I call them back.

Amen brutha. It sucks don't it? Anymore, manufacturers are more or less forcing us to turn into a throw away society. I had the electronic control mechanism that operates the scanning function on a $600 HP laserjet mutifunction scanner. HP wanted to charge me $375 to replace that single part. Why spend that much to repair it, when for little bit more I can buy a brand new one.

It sucks. Same thing with PDA's. It costs $200 to repair the damn thing when you can buy a new one for another $100. What makes matters worse is that companys are slowly scaling back their warranties. 90 day warranty on a $600 product? Nice faith you have in your crap HP!

my cousin's PS2 has recently began to just sorta crash when i play GT3. first i thought it was just GT3, but then i put in MGS2 and it crash also. basically, it give me a BSOD and the red light just keeps blinking on the PS2. is this a common problem? i assume sony will try to rape my cousin for repairs eh? sux man.

Yea, it happens. Our PS2 messes up playing DVD's sometimes. Not gonna bother getting it fixed.

If it would make Sony pay for the problem, which I believe they should, I'd think about it.

But, I didn't buy it at WalMart...and it's as old as the launch.

I believe so, yes.

On another note, if you're brave enough, you can actually buy a laser yourself for something like $60-$75 and install it yourself

I called them back and asked to speak to a supervisor. I was told all the supervisors were in a meeting *cough* bullsheet *cough*. The girl I spoke with (much nicer than the jackass I spoke to earlier today) asked me what the problem was. I told her that I was happy to pay a fair ammount for the repair even though the machine has sustained no phyical trauma, but I thought $120 was outrageous for repair. She said, "I'll see what I can do," left for a few minutes and returned to tell me that the repair cost was waved. I didn't have to argue or anything.

This leads me to belive that there is some flaw with some of the Playstations and that instead of issuing a recall, they're just eating the charges if someone complains.

BDawg, I'm glad you were able to get this taken care of in a reasonable manner. And just so you guys know, swapping PS2's & other consoles is pretty risky since they scan the actual console and record the serial number on the reciept. Just a warning here, not a judgement.

Glad to hear taking the high road can lead to a fair resolution, but when we consumers are backed into a corner some of us will fight back, even if it means taking the low road.

Thats very rare, at least from what I have experienced (from both sides of the issue) in retail. Consider yourself lucky.

I've always used these guys for my repairsVDO Specialties. Good prices and great services. I actually replaced the laser assembly for my psx by myself once too.

do this, go to best buy and buy a new one. Take the good component out then return your old crap. hehehehe
