I have a PS2 that sometimes when in the "turning on" screen the disc drive makes a clicking noise. Also, sometimes while I am playing a game and it starts to load it freezes. Any thoughts?

You may have to crack it open and adjust the cog wheels a couple clicks. A quick google will help with pictures and the correct method. What it is doing is adjusting the proximity of the laser from the disk it is reading to give you better compatibility.

I'd recommend this also. While you have the system open, it would be worth checking to see what type of laser you have. A 400B laser tends to have problems in the long term, while HD7 and 400C lasers can often be adjusted (with the cog as mentioned).

What I do is start with the cog in its original position, and move it 2-10 clicks in one direction, 2 clicks at a time and test with a disc. You can pop the magnetic piece from the top of the optical drive and set it on the disc to hold it in place while testing. For adjusting the cog, a set of hex bits work best.

If moving the cog in one direction doesn't help, try moving the cog in the other direction. If by 10 clicks you don't get any improvement, put things back. You can also try cleaning the laser with some alcohol.

After that, there's not much you can do. Other than installing a modchip + network adapter + hard drive, or buying a new laser, you now have a nice PS2 paperweight!

If you can, get me some details on your system - model (SCPH-xxxx) & laser type. I might be interested in buying it from you if you can't get it to work.
