PS2 Price Drop

In March at the PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo, Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi insisted that no price drop was planned for his company's popular console, the PlayStation 2. However, in the subsequent weeks, numerous Wall Street analysts cited retail sources as saying that a PS2 price drop from $149 to $129 was in the works.

While many analyst predictions have turned out to be exaggerations, underestimates, or just plan wrong, they were spot-on in this case. Just over a month later, Sony has changed its mind.

This morning, the company announced it was indeed lowering he PS2's price to $129, effective immediately. "Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer at a new value price," said Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

By Sony's estimates, the PS2 is currently the top console in the US, holding a 55.6 percent market share. The company also cited NPD Funworld figures as proof that the console had "70 percent lead over any other competitor when it comes to software titles available at market in March."

I was waiting for the drop so I could get a used (or refurbished) one cheaper. Ebgames is selling them for only $10 less than a new one.

I guess I'll just wait longer...

I'm really glad I didn't buy one a couple of months ago when I was considering it. My kids have a bad habit of leaving the PS1 games lying on the floor so they get cracked, scratched, etc. They also have a bad habit of mistreating the console, too.

But...At $129, I may finally bite. I do wish $99 was in the near future, though.

The PS3 is going to be $400-600! The Ps2 is much cheaper, and since the kids do not take care of the PS1, I'm CERTAINLY not going to consider investing in the PS3!

All we have now is an Nintendo 64 and a PS1 with cd over broken off. We are mostly PC gamers and I don't have a clue about PS2 stuff. What controller and accessories will I need to get above the $129 price? Do some games have online play with team speak? Do I hook-up to the phone line or DSL for online? Is there a monthly fee for PS2 online or is that XBOX?

My wife said that the PS2 was marked down to $129 at out local WalMart toaday, but I want to wait for a Kingdom Hearts 2 bundle to save even more.

The base console comes with one controller, so the main accessory you'll need to buy is a memory card, around $24.99, so you can save your games.

If you have a nice TV, you might want to shell out for S-Video or Component cables, but not necessary as the console comes with basic composite cables. You might want an extra controller, maybe wireless.

Most online games for PS2 are free, but I don't think there's that many of them. Xbox charges for Xbox Live online play.

Doubt you will ever see a Kingdom Hearts 2 bundle, unless the store bundle it themselves. Also Kingdom Hearts 2 just came out so it'll be a while, 6+ months, before it drops in price. If you can wait, might as well wait for Christmas 2006, when the PS2 might drop to the $99 level and the game you want might drop in price as well.

Wal-Mart has updated thier price... at least online and I suspect in-store as well.

Bring the ad just in case... since it's a "roll-back" and not a special the store should honor it even if it's not been changed in their store yet (it should be though).

Man, I wish they'd come out with a Guitar Heroes bundle. Actually, I wish GH would just come out for Xbox. Gosh darnit.
