PS2 ports dead

Trying to troubleshoot my daughter's computer from 400 miles away.

W2K Pro OS
Has wireless mouse/keyboard. She installed both Yahoo & MSN IM programs. Since, no mouse or KB.

Changed batteries, tried resetting channels per instructions, checked connections, tried different wired PS2 mouse & KB, rebooted several times, checked device manager, no mouse or KB.

Had her put in USB mouse, that works but no KB.

Will resetting CMOS help?

Other suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Do the lights on a PS/2 keyboard light up when the system is powered on? If the PS/2 mouse is optical, does that light up as well?

I was wondering if she might have plugged or unplugged the PS/2 kbd or mse (receiver unit) while the power was on - that's a strict no-no with PS/2. Might have blown the fuse (little thing that looks sort of like a diode or resistor and is normally located near the PS/2 connectors and usually will have an ~ or its label will be Fx (often F1 as it's usually the only one on the mobo) mark next to it. Easy for any competent electronics tech to diagnose and repair (it will have 5V on the hot side and 0V on the PS/2 jack end). The one fuse supplies both ports with 5V. Have the tech replace the fuse with one of the new "plastic" self-resetting ones to prevent this problem in the future.
. With a cordless kbd/mse you can't always tell by the lights whether jack power is present or not unless there is a power light on the little receiver box. The LED on the receiver will be out if the fuse is blown. Any LEDs that are local to the kbd or mse will of course be running off the batteries in them.

No. The lights on the receiver are out. Mouse lights are on, KB off. Checking fuse from next post. (Hope someone in her dorm has a multimeter.

Thanks

It seems as if the ports are out. No light on KB even with wired unit. Trying to find someone in her dorm to check fuse. Thanks for the suggestion.

I just took a look at a mobo I had hare and the darn PS/2 fuse is a surface mount. Looks like a tiny brick. One I fixed before looked like a yellowish metal film resistor w/o the color stripes. I think I used a 0.5 A picofuse as a replacement (just tack soldered the thing to the ends of the existing one) if you can't find/decipher the markings on the one she has. You might want to call the mobo maker for proper sizing.

Hard for me to see. She's in NYC & I'm north of Buffalo. Her friend with a meter found no DC to any of the pins. Sounds like fuse is gone. I might just send her a USB KB. Will this work in Setup before Windows boots?

Legacy USB support has to be enabled in the BIOS for USB kbd/mse to work during boot. Don't know what the default is on her mobo. I think those are usually enabled by default, but I usually disable it in mine as I don't use USB input devices.
