PS2 Port Wierdness

Insidious

Diamond Member
OK, I just finished upgrading my home comuters (see My Rig)

Now, I have PS2 port wierdness that I would love to get solved...... Just have no idea how.

1st of all, the mouse....... I am using a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. When I turn off the computer, the 'taillight' remains lit. If I pull the mouse plug from the PS2 port and then replace it, the mouse gets de-energized??? I did look this one up on the M$ help sites and found that they acknowledge this behavior and recommend using a USB mouse or just ignoring the behavior.

2nd, the keyboard. Sometimes when I start the computer, my keyboard is ignored. I notice the numlock, capslock, and scroll lock lights are all lit continuously. If I quickly pull the keyboard plug from the PS2 port and replace it when I first begin booting, the keyboard will get recognized correctly. This doesn't happen very often and seems more likely when I have just saved BIOS changes prior to the boot. (Doesn't seem to matter exactly what I changed..... just saving the BIOS seems to make this issue pop up more frequently)

The mouse light staying on happens with my computer/mouse as well (MS Intellimouse Optical). I don't ever turn mine off so it's not really a problem. As for the keyboard, I've seen that type of thing happen with a computer in a prof's office. The machine's an Acer, so I don't expect too much from them to begin with. I don't know of any fix for it.

yeah, I crunch protiens so my machines are only turned off when I am maintaining or experimenting, so it is really just an annoyance rather than a problem for me with the mouse and keyboard.

I went ahead and ordered a second USB2 slot connector for the third port on my MoBo (no front USBs on my case) so that will put me up to 6 USBs and let me switch the mouse over to USB (was out of ports) and will probably do a USB keyboard since they are so cheap. (Been meaning to get wireless for a while now.)

Thanks for the reply. It always feels better not to be "the only one" 🙂
