PS2? Playing and saving PS1 games on it?

Hello,
I have a ? I have a PS2, and I have been trying to play an old great PS1 game Vagrant Story. But It will not detect my memory card (which is a brand). So I cannot save!!! It says "memory card not inserted correctly" or something like that. Now how can I save my ps1 games. Do I need an official Sony PS2 memory card?
