Hey guys, sorry if this is old news or if it's been mentioned here already.

The PS2 recently appears to have FINALLY ceased production. Most major online retailers have it listed as no longer available, and supply seems to be close to thinning out in B&M stores. I went to a Best Buy last night that didn't have any, and then I ran to a Target and they had 2.

I think it's a good buy for $100. I have a good collection of PS2 games that I otherwise would have no way of playing. Only some PS3s appear to be backward-compatible with PS2 games. So once the PS2 vanish, there's no real dependable way for you to play those classic games.

On eBay new systems seem to go from $150+.

EDIT: possibly(?) out of production? Maybe not? Can't edit title. Definitely getting hard to find, that's for sure.

Hmm... that wouldn't surprise me. I finally sold my slim PS2 with a few games for $60 after months of listing it around $75. No one bit.

Would be just my luck that prices start driving up. I doubt it though.

I'm glad I still have my PS2. I thought about spending $100 more on a backwards-compatible PS3, but I'm glad I didn't. For one I wouldn't be able to sell my PS2 for nearly that much. And two I can have my PS2 connected to my computer monitor to play console games when my wife is watching TV.

Well if it's not technically out of production, then retailers have definitely stopped ordering them. But those two tend to go hand in hand.

And as I'm sure you know there's a huge difference between used and new console systems in terms of resale. I suspect that used PS2 systems will be relatively cheap to find for some time to come, since there's something like 28,299,382,396,190 PS2s in the world.

I bought one because I wanted to be sure I can play my games 5 years from now when I go on a nostalgia kick. My original PS2 died a few years ago and I have been slow to replace it.

I doubt it is out of production. Sony will announce when they do stop producing it, they did the same with the PS1. Though it is possible since it is coming up on its 10th year in production which is what Sony had planned for it.

I still have a bunch of old PS2 games from when my PS2 still worked. Of course it hasn't worked since about 2 years after I bought it (disc read errors). Thinking of picking up another one now that I've moved into a new house and we'll have two TVs.

No, it's not out of production, at least there's be absolutely no word of it. Sony usually announces stuff like that. Plus, the PS2 is still pushing a ton of units and is still making a profit. Makes no sense for Sony to discontinue it now.

even if it is PS2's would still be so easy to find. Pawn shops in my area are full of them for $40(for the phat) $60 for the slim. Not to mention Gamestop always has them(in my area).

Sony sold quite a few PS2s at Xmas, and makes a nice profit on the console itself so this is doubtful.

It's just retailers being careful about restocking after xmas. Did you see the thread from someone thinking the Wii was being replaced by a new Wii HD because it was out of stock too?

As long as games are still being released for it Sony won't cut production. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is the latest release, and I know the new version of The Show will have a PS2 version as well. I think a lot of PSP games get ported also.

There's no way they're stopping production on the PS2. It's still making tons of money for them. Just because some retailers are out of stock on it doesn't mean it's not being made any more.

Ok ok, bad call then. I apologize, was a misguided guess. Many major retailers say "unavailable" and I found 2 systems total at 3 B&Ms. I've never had trouble finding a PS2 before.

Please delete thread... or something.

Well, this is its tenth year. More than likely the stores are selling there stock of current PS2s to make room for Sony's next revision, which will be, what, revision 18? Either that or cause a fever and release another PS3 revision with PS2 BC again. Who really knows. The company has been so quirky.

Won't happen since they're going to be putting up PS2 games for download on the Sony Store. At least that's been the rumor for a long time.

I wouldn't want to be on the team trying to make a full software emulator to play PS2 games on a PS3. Probably a lot of pre-mature gray hair in that office.

Sony has been trying to stop production for years lmao. The problem is that overall sales of the PS3 has been lower than expected and they can't afford to lose the revenue stream that the PS2 brings in. In the US the PS3 is finally selling fairly strong, but in many other parts of the worth the PS2 still reigns king. My guess is that the PS2 will stick around at least another year and then once the PS4 is announced you will see the PS2 fade away, with the PS3 following suit soon after the PS4 is released. Microsoft was smart to kill the Xbox when the 360 was released, because it funneled sales to the new console. Sony should have done the same thing with the PS2/PS3. If they had killed the PS2 shortly after PS3 released, many of the PS2 sales would have reverted to PS3. It is true that Sony would have sacrificed a revenue stream, but in the end PS3 adoption rates would have been far higher earlier on which in turn would have helped persuade developers to create more content for it.

Microsoft killed the original Xbox cus they needed to. If it sold what the PS2 was selling then you could have been sure they would have still been pumping it out but it wasn't so they killed it off. Killing the original Xbox didn't bring more sales to the 360. Most people that bought a 360 never had an original Xbox and the sales numbers show it.
