Not necessarily a difference in performance but USB is the future!!

I think PS2 is considered a legacy port now due to USB and is possibly going to be phased out because it is no longer needed!!!

yeah, I work at Staples on Saturdays and pretty much our entire stock of mice is USB. A lot of them also come with PS2 adapters, so it's up to you. USB offers excellent plug-and-play tho.

If you are looking for a great new mouse, Logitech has a their new MX1000 featuring the Logitech MX? Laser Engine!

They claim 20x more sensitivity to surface detail?or tracking power?than optical, laser can track reliably even on tricky polished or wood-grain surfaces.

It will definately be my next mouse purchase.

And yes, the cordless RF transmitter connects to USB.

forget the mouse just buy the PS2. It has a much better selection of games than your .....
er just kidding.

USB mouse is best if your going to use Windows 2000 or XP. Older versions of windows, DOS and Linux sometimes did not work correctly with usb mice.

Speaking of the MX1000, it should work on your shiny desk, that's one of the things Logitech claims to have improved. I love mine, but then again I just got it last night.

There are two schools of thought.

1) USB is here and you can't stop it.
2) Hangon to PS/2 while you can. ("If it ain't broken don't fix it" kinda thing).

Why you might ask.

1) USB may allow you to increase the sampling rate of your mouse (if you care).
2) USB puts load (though insignificant to some) on your CPU for each USB item you add (USB is a controllerless interface like a winmodem).

Perfect solution buy a USB mouse that comes with a PS/2 adapter. Use it as PS/2 as long as you have a mobo with PS/2 ports then use it a a USB mouse when you finally buy (or upgrade to) a system that doesn't have them.

Thanks all for suggestions. Here is what I did.

Fancy mice were too expensive in India and mostly unavailable. I bought a PS2 and it works fine on shiny reflective desktop. My USB laptop mouse [same Logitech make but USB] does not work at all on the same surface and I need to use a pad. Go figure!!

i thought ps2 had a faster sampling rate, and usb for mice was actually a step back? i figured this was why my intellimouse had a option in device manager to set the sample rate, 100 defaulkt for usb and a 200 option for if ps2 was used.

actually, recently read this (which i have no clue about, but definately wasnt about to try)
