I came across this in the Win2K SP2 fix list:

Q262798 PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse Not Recognized When Plugged Into Running Computer

Hmm... I thought they aren't supposed to be plugged into running computer.

you can do both

I have done both under NT4, win2k, and win98. The mouse must be plugged in before booting for NT4, though. If it is plugged in before boot and then booted, you can unplug and plug at will.

jokeram is correct...

Keyboard yes. Mouse no. It has nothing to do with the OS. It's the fact that motherboards have native KBD bioses. There's no such thing as a "mouse BIOS" and the part needs to be plug and played and the drivers loaded at boot up. USB is different since it is "hot pluggable" by it's very nature, so those mice don't count in this question.

ok... iamwiz.... Let me clarify... You can have it plugged in, unplug it and plug it back in again and THAT works. How do you think cheap switch boxes work?!?!

Unplug your mouse and restart. Tell me if your mouse works, ok?

lupin said "I thought they aren't supposed to be plugged into running computer", meaning one that is already running.

Also, lupin... There are a few instances of hot plugging keyboards frying boards due to the sudden jolt of juice coming through the KBD port. It's a lot of juice! So much that before USB, there were quite a few keyboard port powered devices (personally I have a joystick, 5 port hub and a bar code scanner).

technically it's not a good idea, but very rarely does anything bad happen, at least with ps/2, i've heard a few horror stories, but very rarely does it ever happen.
