PS2 having difficulty readings discs

So the only way is for me to turn the diagnostic to on and then it will read my ps2 games. Should I replace the laser or should I just try to clean it? It's a pretty old ps2, prob. the first generation and it has never given me problems before. I'm afraid if i don't fix it now that it'll be more trouble later. advice?

Take it apart and clean the laser manually. I've done it, it's easy.

EDIT: Don't use rubbing alcohol on the lens, it damages the coating on the laser. Go to a camera store and pick up a cleaner that is specified for cameras or telescope lenses only

The old TechTV had the instructions to open up and adjust the PS2 laser, under the screen savers, and X-play. If you can not find the instructions then try g4techtv.ca and look under call for help.

Give Sony a call. When my first generation PS2 stopped reading CDs about a year or so ago, they replaced it free of charge.

Really? Hmm. I cleaned my CDRW drive's lens with isopropyl alcohol. I did notice that it seemed to have not really helped the second time that I did so, and it had trouble reading some discs, and when erasing CDRWs, had an uneven "texture" to the burned surface. Perhaps that caused it? I had up until now assumed that I had mechanically bumped it too hard while cleaning it.

adjust the laser height, I did it when I started to have DREs and it's just about as good as new (still a *little* slow to load)

Is that where you adjust a little white plastic wheel? If so, that's how I fixed my PS2.

1-800-345-SONY, they'll most likely repair it for free if you haven't messed with it.

yes they will, itll cost you like 30$ to ship ot to them but they will fix it for free

i have tried everything, but ps2 will no longer read 100% of the time.If it will not read, I have to open it up and mess with the laser height till it reads. I would ask sony, but my sticker was removed because i changed the chassis. replacing your laser is you very last resort.

my gf's brother had the same problem. he just opened it up and cleaned out the inside. said it was pretty dusty. try doing the same.
