While trying to watch some DVDs on my g/f's PS2, it's been awful to watch because the image is really dark and heavily skewed toward a reddish tint. The Score, The Glass House, American Pie 2 have been the worst. The odd thing is while AP2 was too dark in the movie proper, the extras (outakes, etc.) looked fine. Games look good too.

A check of Usenet seems to indicate that Macrovision may be the culprit and to not run it thru a VCR on the chain, but we're plugging it into the AV inputs on the back of the TV directly.

Is there any fix for this or do we have a screwed up unit? Thanks.

Hmm...I have that problem when i hook the PS2 up through my VCR...but when I hook it straight up to my TV the problems go away. I actually just finished watching The Score on my PS2 and it looked good...

Macrovision :-]

try feeding the video signal to the tv via an RF converter

<< Get a real DVD player. =) >>

No shirt, Sh*tlock. I'VE got a DVD player, but for some reason my g/f's family decided to just use the DVD ability of the PS2. (Ya got me.) It seems odd that this hasn't happened to more people.

It explicitly says in the Playstation 2 Instruction manual to NOT use a VCR when using the PS2 dvd playback. That's why I only connect the PS2 to my TV via component cables. When I tried using a VCR between the connection to a projection television I got a horrible picture.

Unless you've got a high quality VCR that can maintain the image quality I suggest finding another means of hooking a PS2 to your TV. (Radio frequency [RF] adapter, composite, S-video, or component :) cables.

The more switches, adapters, and hardware you run it through, the worse the picture.

The PS2 isn't exactly the best DVD player. I've seen the gold back Jurassic park DVDs revised because they would not play on the PS2. Now the JP dvds have stickers on them saying "PS2 compatable".

If you want a good dvd player make sure it's a progressive scan model (480p) so it will work if you ever get an HDTV ready television.
