PS2 DVD playback... is there such a thing as a DVD movie that isn't compatible?

We just bought the Gladiator DVD. The first copy we bought skipped during a certain scene. So, we thought the DVD might be scratched or damaged in some way. We got it exchanged. The 2nd copy skips during the exact same scene. Any ideas?

Gladiator is a Dual Layer DVD, have you tried other Dual Layer DVDs? It may be during the layer change that this issue is occouring.

I find it hard to believe, but there might be a problem with the decoder of the PS2. Also, there might be a problem with your PS2 in particular.

I know some software decoding has a lot of skipping/video glitches, but I thought the PS2 was high quality hardware decoding (particularly because of the wimpy CPU it has). I would try looking on the Sony message boards or something to see if this is a problem with the PS2 as a system, and not yours in particular.

It's perfectly normal on multi-layer DVD's for them to pause/skip for a second or two whilst changing layers. It's not a playstation 2 issue - it would happen on any DVD player.

Hope this puts your mind at rest ;)

Okay, maybe that's what the deal is. I haven't tried very many movies on it yet, just Heat and Gladiator. I guess I'll find out for sure if I try another dual layer DVD.

Gladiator skipped on my Pioneer DV-525 when it changed layers, as well as on my PS2. Just a normal occurance.

yeah I think my DVDROM does that too, don't be alarmed!

though it would be nice if they buffered the previous scene and skipped to the next layer whilst playing from the buffer.. can't have it all I guess..

I don't know if this info helps any, but I was in Blockbuster Video a few hours ago and they had a display of DVDs on the counter for sale and right on the packaging it said "Playstation 2 DVD Playback Compatible" or something to that affect. The reason I remember this is because it struck me odd that there might be certain types of DVDs that would not play back on a PS2.

I didnt notice it with my Pioneer 104S and Power DVD 3.

Perhaps I blinked when it happened :)

Skipping should not be a normal occurance on any DVD player. You might have a split second pause but that should be it. This was a problem with first generation DVD players and dual layer discs. The Matrix and The Mummy will probably give you similar results.
