PS2, Can I play Burned Games/DVD's

Ok my girlfriend is telling me she has played a burned game and CAN play burned DVD's on her ps2. I've never owned one nor do I want to, but I did not think you could play burned games without some sort of mod chip, atleast for the ps1 I know this is the case, for the most part. What about dvd's as well ?

I think I saw a place on the net selling games that did not need any mod to work for the PS2, maybe she is talking about those? For the most part you would need an external adapter along with a game shark or an internal mod chip. I'm not sure on the DVD's.
