PS2 and Xbox Release Dates

Me and some friends have been arguing about the graphics on xbox and ps2 and they say ps2 sucks and i told them it was because i heard ps2 was released a year earlier. They say they were released on the same day. On a website i also read that ps2 had sold 20 million units before xbox sold 1, and that didnt happen in 1 day. I just want to make sure, so does anyone know for sure? please dont post what you "think". I looked all over the net for info and i couldnt find anything, but seeing as i am a little search engine illiterate, i want help.
