PS2 A/V questions

I checked out Sony's specs on the PS2, and I couldn't find the exact output config.

Does it have S-Video out? It says that it has "AV Multi Out" and "Optical Out" but the optical is for audio and I can't imagine why, except to avoid ground loops. There isn't DD or DTS tracks on PS2 CDs, so why would there be optical audio out?

I figured A/V Multi Out is just your typical RGY composite connection.

<< There isn't DD or DTS tracks on PS2 CDs, so why would there be optical audio out? >>

so you can run it through your HT receiver for DVD playback

Right but I'm out of optical connections.

If I already have a good DVD player then I should be ok with using it with an analog connection and a ground loop isolator?

Why can't you just plug it into audio RCA jacks into your reciever? You shouldn't have to worry about a special hookup if you're not using optical out

<< Does it have component out? >>

My guess is no. Console companies like to put a specialized jack on the back of their systems where you must purchase (or use the included cable) a special cable to use better connections (svideo, component video, etc)

Yeah, if you turn the volume all the way up with nothing playing there is a very distinct and annoying hum at 60 hz.

There are no component outs.

all it has are rca outs, and an optical out. As an avid minidisc fan, the optical out is great as it lets me record cds onto minidisc at a higher sounding quality.

it is a good dvd player-since most of us don't have nice enough televisions to intrepret a digital signal anyway. Until then, it is great.

sig.

I would think so. The "AV Multi Out" is just the PS2's input where it supports the standard RGY, S-Video, and Component providing you have the cables that plug into it.

The PS2 can output Composite, Svideo, and Component (and possibly SVGA) depending on which adapter cable you buy. It comes with the good ole' composite RCA cable, but you can buy either the Svideo or Component cables for ~$20.

Yes, you need to buy the PS2 S-Video cables. Regular S-Video cables won't work because they don't have the PS2 input/plug/whatever it is.

Picture of the input Not the S-Video, the Component, but they have essentially the same input/plug/whatever.

Elemental:

Teh PS2 has a wierd multi-out like illkid has posted, and then you just use simple adapter cables that go "PS2 Multi-Out" on one end to Svideo on the other:

Here is what the PS2 comes with in the box:

Multi AV Out ---> Composite(RCA) cable : This plugs one end into the Multi-Out post in the back of the PS2 and into the TV/VCR's RCA Video IN plugs.

But then you can replace that cable with either:

Multi AV Out ---> SVideo cable : ~$20
or
Multi AV Out ---> Component cable : ~$25

And then you throw the Multi AV Out ---> Composite(RCA) cable into the box and use the new cable to go out of the PS2 and into the Svideo input on your TV (or reciever).

I have one of the original playstations, when they had the actual RCA jacks on the back of the unit. This was cool because I could have two outputs hooked up at once. But I guess they scrapped the jacks to cut costs. ( and make more money on proprietary cables)
