PS 3 Problem No audio in games

I got my PS3 at release about 4 years ago or so and it has worked fine until now.
I first notice last week that I had no audio when I streamed from netflix. The I tried to play a game and had the same issue no audio. I have no problem playing a a DVD or Blue ray disk though.
I called Sony and they walked me threw some shut down and start up procedures that were suppose to help but in the end said that I needed to have it repaired.
So I wondered if anyone else had this problem and new of a easy fix. I don't have the extra cash to repair it right now and for the cost of the repair I may be better off buying a new one.

It just seems odd that I get audio when watching a DVD or Blue ray but it wont work or netfilx or games.

Uncheck all audio options in your PS3 until the only checked options are 2 channel PCM (select no more than 44, 48, 96, and 192 options).

Thanks I had tried that already. Were you select 2 channel instead of HDMI like you said and then fired up the game, no sound of course and then selected the HDMI and tried the game still no sound, I have also tried to swap out HDMI cables. With no luck.
I understand that I have had it for a long time and I if something breaks I should just deal with it but can't see why it works fine for movies and not for games or netflix.
