PS/2 port

Hi,

So here is the full story. I haven't used the internet much this summer, and i finally got internet connection in my apartment. I opened up outlook express and started blindly deleting mails cause they all looked like junk. As i was deleting a DOS prompt popped up and i closed it. After that dos prompt my ps/2 port seemed to stop working. At first my mouse didn't work, it would just hang around, so i thought it was my mouse until i plugged in a ps/2 keyboard and the keyboard wasn't working. I am currently using a mouse that uses a usb port, but it isn't my mouse. Does anyone know what i can do to fix this ps/2 port problem?

I'm running windows xp home edition
amd atholon 1800+ xp
k7t266 pro2 mobo

I formatted my comp thinking there was a virus but the ps/2 port still didn't work
At times when i start up my computer it wouldn't let me saying that a certain file was missing, i haven't received the error yet after i formatted and reinstalled windows, but yea any suggestions to get my ps/2 port up and running.?

Thank you

Try checking your BIOS for a setting that would enable/disable your ports. Make sure your PS/2 isn't disabled for some reason. I'd also install some kind of Antivirus software and run a virus scan (you didn't mention anything about having virus protection), because the dos prompt window you got sounds like one of your emails was infected with some type of virus (assuming you have message preview on like most people do) which ran itself when the message was opened up in the preview pane. I hear Avast is a good free Anti-virus program if you don't have any AV protection.

Yes, i do have virus protection and i scanned. Nothing showed up. Um, the ps/2 ports should be on in the bios because the mouse usually works for the first 5 minutes of windows being started up. It just suddenly stops working. Thank for you help

Did you update your AntiVirus with the latest Virus Definations before you scanned??
If not, update and rescan, just to make sure...

So obviously the keyboard works in the bios and if you boot to a floppy disk right? If thats so, then the problem is you have some sort of virus or program running in windows that is disabling them. Find it and delete it or have fun reinstalling 🙂

he says in his post that he already formated and reinstalled so i don't see how it could be a virus. sounds more like a hardware issue. have you recently installed anything new?

Hi, well my problem is fixed. After fomatting and reinstalling everything the problem continued to happen. I borrowed a friend's usb mouse to mess around with the computer for a bit, so as i said before my ps/2 mouse would work and then stop working. At this moment it hasn't stopped, i dont' know how this happened, but i'm happy it works. I'll keep this updated with more info if the problem continues, but things look pretty good. Thanks for you help

HI everyone, please help me, the problem continued to happen. eveything worked fine until i shut it down for the weekend. I just got back and the same error occurred. So after i formatted everything (thinking that there was a virus) the problem still occurs. This time i wrote down the error i got in the start up screen. IT said

,windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing, or corrupt please reinstall this file.

My ps/2 port doesn't work again, and i had to restart several times before i got to use my mouse. Anyone have any suggestions? thank you.

I'm thinking about just getting the file off of the windows cd that i have but it only has ntoskrnl.ex_. I'm not too sure why its named that way, so i don't really dare to do much with it. Also, i did a search and the file is actually in my system. At this point i'll assume that its corrupt. Should i just overwrite the file with the one on the windows installation CD?

You have an essential file corrupt, so here is what you need to do (assuming you have your Windows CD):
Remember, when you try this, you need to change "D" to whatever letter is assigned to your CD-ROM (D, E, F or whatever).
Put your Windows CD in, restart, get to BIOS, change first boot to CD-ROM, save&exit.
You'll boot from CD, go to recovery console, at C:\Windows prompt, type:
COPY D:\I386\NTOSKRNL.EXE C:
and press enter. This should fix your problem, try and let us know!

Goodluck,

Tried it, it said access denied

Should i just get the file stright from the CD, extract it and then just copy it over in the system32 folder?

Did you try connecting your drive to another system as slave and copying NTOSKRNL into it from Windows CD?
I am pretty sure your problem will be fixed if you manage to do the copying thing.

Anyways, goodluck,

Xiety

You can try, I am not sure. However, windows might be keeping a copy of the replaced file, and everytime your reboot, might replace the file back with the old one. You can always try though, goodluck,

oddly enough, i don't get the error message anymore, instead, my mouse just stops working after 5 mins or so. Any take on this? Dude i don't know what is up, i did replace the file through windows, i couldn't do it from windows recovery. Thanks.
