I'm reposting this from the Peripherals forum.

Debian squeeze, fresh install. I am new to linux, and i do not know how to change/update the drivers under linux. I have installed the mdetect package but nothing happened. I have searched the Debian pages and under their hardware section the mouse is missing.
In /var/log/Xorg.0.log the device is listed as ImPS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse.
There are also /dev/input/mice, /dev/input/mouse0 and /dev/psaux files which they are empty.
I hope this means something to you.

From another site i found a post saying that after mdetect you must run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" (it was an old post).

The mouse is almost okay. The scroll does not work and neither the right mouse button.
The mouse is an optical PS/2 wired Konig CMP-MOUSE14.

No, but i have more problems now. I get a frozen screen on account login and working on root account. I will try a couple of other distros and maybe install ubuntu back later on which was working okay (it could be after a month or two). It was slower than debian but i do not know what services they start with (if it was more loaded than debian). I also have a different disk setup which is maybe slightly faster. Debian is working non-stop on my laptop with two mistakes only.

It's been a while since I used a PS/2 mouse, but all I remember having to do was set the protocol to ImPS/2 and the wheel and everything just worked.

The /dev files you mentioned aren't empty, they're interfaces to the hardware. If you run 'cat /dev/input/mice' and move your mouse it should print what looks like garbage which is the data from the driver about the mouse movements.
