My uncle have a few big ass maples in his yard and he want me to help him take care of them, any pointer on when/where/what to trim? Not sure the kind but they have smaller green leafs, big fat chunk 6-10' tall then a few big limbs split up like....fingers pointing upward with skinny branches(some of them are 10'-20' with shape of an arch) everywhere . They're like 30-40' tall, any things above 15' I won't be able to reach. The goal is to keep them healthy, any trips?

my tip: hire an Arborist

we just spent 5k getting all our trees trimmed. they look great and should be much healthier for the future. We do have a lot of trees. one tree should be less than 500 bucks.

otherwise you can cut out the dead stuff, but its best to do it when they are dormant.

wow, how many trees you trimmed? I have seen people trim off everything, and left a 20ft tall chunk(not sure if it is intentional to kill the tree so they won't get fine by the city) did your guy get up and do inspection and cut all the dead branches or cut everything off?

There is one tree that have two big 30' long limbs shot up from the chunk at a 15 degree angle, I worry that one most.

lets see... i have 1 pear, 3 apple, about 25 various pines up to 50 or 60 feet, 4 large black locust 40 to 50 feet, a linden 30 feet, a norway maple 30 feet, 2 mugho pines at about 15 feet. 4 required cabling, all got the dead wood pruned and all the non-pines got balanced and structure pruning. took 2 guys 3 solid days climbing. if you have a big crotch on a tree you can install a cable between the 2 limbs to keep the base from splitting. it gets drilled though and the tree grows around it. all stainless with special fittings. I myself cut down a 36 in dia silver maple and about 20 other smaller trees/ stand of brush. Our property had no maintenance for the 10 or 15 years before we bought it. We have removed aprox. 15000 lbs of vegetation.

proper pruning will make your trees healthy. We are hoping to have them fill out better for more screening from the state road we live off of.
