Hi, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with free proxy servers? Are they reliable and secure? I would like to use them to log on to a chat room anonymously? In other words I am trying to have my IP address show up as anonymous. If not, is there any other way of doing this? Thanks for any help. It is appreciative.

Welcome to AnandTech Network Forum.

You can not do it from your own computer alone, you need to subscribe to a Proxy Service.

The idea is that your surfing goes through their server so the IP that appears on the destination site is the Proxy Server IP and not yours.

You have to keep in mind that they the Proxy server know your real Address and log the traffic.

So it is not like you can do what ever you want to do and get away with it.

There is no really anonymity on the Net. The reason that some time they do not catch the ?Guys? is because they do what they do from Countries that do not respect International Laws.

Thanks for the info Jack. Just curious, if I use a proxy service, would it slow down the speed / throughput of my computer as I am running off a dsl modem / T1 provider.

Jack,

After reading your post again my understanding is my isp IP address (EX 34.123.176.34) goes into the proxy server and comes out with an IP provided by it as (EX 56.354.481.23) to the destination site which logs it as (EX 56.354.481.23).

If that is correct, does it slow down the throughput I receive from my dsl / t1 connection? If so, is it noticeable?

yes it will slow throughput. of course by how much depends on 2 things

1) the speed of the proxy hardware many users on a slow proxy will casue it to chug

2) the speed of the pipe the proxy is on. example your on a T1 the proxy is on a 56k modem. you connect to proxy to grab a web page. it goes off and grabs it webpage through the 56k line then passes it back down the 56k line to you.

This is of course a worse case scenario if you are using one at your isp chances are it will have more bandwidth then you have but that doesnt mean a lot of speed its a case of trial and error. i am forced through a proxy and so far its been fine.

If the hardware and line can handle it then the differnece is not alot esp if the proxy is on your ISP network.

Yeah this is basically the Idea.

And as far as ?Speed? see Fuzznuts post.

Thanks for responding Fuzz to the second part of my question about throughput.

Can you please answer the question I had of IP through a proxy. My understanding is my isp IP address (EX 34.123.176.34) goes into the proxy server and comes out with an IP provided by it as (EX 56.354.481.23) to the destination site which logs it as (EX 56.354.481.23).

Is that true?

Guys, he's talking about a free proxy server!

Do you really think he's going to find someone that's going to give him T1 bandwidth for the sole purpose of hiding his IP address for nothing? If you do, I have this bridge in Brooklyn that I'd like to make you a good deal on... :)
