Proxy Servers.....Can someone explain.

I'm wondering if there is a good tutorial site anywhere, or even a book explaining the setting up and running of a proxy server, as well as explaining exactly what they are and what they do. I want to set my PC up to use one of the free public ones, just for sh!ts & grins, and the sheer sake of curiosity. Basically I just want to learn something new because I'm bored.

Unless you have some access restrictions I wouldn't do it. I've tried them and they are slow. I can't get out on most ports here at work, so I checked them out. What is does basicaly is you contact the proxy and tell it what site or address you want, it goes and get the address and sends it back to you..

Shouldn't this be in networking?:Q
