Proxy server?

I have a media center PC that I could leave on 24/7 with Win7.
Is there any way I could set this computer up as a proxy server?

I am asking because I would like to be able to use hulu, etc. when travelling internationally but they all use an IP address location filter (and I am to cheap to use one of the paid proxy server services).

PS: I already tried connecting via VPN but my internet connection at home is too slow for that ... I am hoping that a proxy server solution would be less taxing on my internet connection.

i've used privoxy in conjunction with hamachi. it works, but not without bugs. it's like privoxy just quits working after some time. i'm sure there are alternatives to privoxy though.

If you are using a proxy from home, but a VPN from home isn't fast enough, why would the proxy be fast enough? Less overhead in the proxy?

What type of router do you have (assuming you have one)? The reason that I ask is that it might be faster to surf via SSH encrypted connection through your home router (I'm doing it right now from a hotel) than via VPN.

I've used (free, open-source) squid at work running on Server 2003, but just to test our software against a proxy not to watch Matlock.

It's pretty easy to set up.

Squid is pretty much the industry standard HTTP proxy, however I don't know how good it's Windows builds are.

There are cases, that I've read about, of Squid actually being installed on a router running Tomato. Hell, now I might want to try that myself, now that I think of it, lol.

I don't really see why. Those SOHO routers don't have enough disk space to create much of a cache so it's pretty pointless.

Sorry, meant it was on an Asus 520GU router with 2GB (maybe more, don't remember) flash drive attached and mounted. IIRC, that is also where Squid resided and was started from.
