I want to set up a proxy server on my cable connection at home, then connect to it from a remote location and browse the internet. Our school has one hell of an internet content blocker, and I need to access stuff from school that is blocked. (NOT PORN... even crap like "Games" and "Weapons" is blocked.)

Anyone know of a easy to use proxy server that will allow this?

I could just use VNC or something to gain access to a computer at home, but that would suck. :D

I don't know much about proxy servers, so if anyone has some insight, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

go to your browser settings and turn off the proxy settings. They may not have port 80 blocked, then you can get thru fine.

If they have port 80 blocked then it would require significantly more work then it would be worth.

Remember that the proxy doesn't only block content but is a security and safety measure that can stuff viruses/worms and spyware.

I think you might have missed my objective.

I want to ENABLE the proxy setting in my browser, and setup a proxy SERVER at home, so I can browse, unblocked, using my connection at home.

If it is still too much trouble, anyone know of a good secure VNC type program?

How does you school block content?

Probably thru a proxy. I don't know of a better way. You turn that off and your problem is solved. That is is they don't do a proper job of blocking ports.

If you realy want to set up a proxy at home, squid is one. there are lots of others you can use. Set it up to listen on port 8080 or what ever you want. However if they have ports blocked and that content-blocker is the only way to get out, then your SOL.

FYI,

Asking for (and providing answers to) ways of getting round company/school filtering systems is a bannable offence here.
