proxy server question...

This might be a topic for the OS forum... but it does deal with networking... so maybe it's acceptable here.

I want to run a Proxy server...

These are the system specs...

Dual P3-700
256mb
4.3gb, 2x13.5gb, 9gb scsi HD's
dual AMD 10/100 NICs

I want to know what OS I should run... that will let allow me to run a GOOD and more importatntly FREE proxy.

I am leaning towards FreeBSD 4.4 now, because I'm sure they'll have something nifty in the ports... but my other choices are Solaris and Win2k Server. I don't know of any proxy packages for the other two... that are free at least.

Also, considering the low amount of ram (for a server) which OS would be the best suited for the system?

Don't know much about Solaris, but I would use FreeBSD over Win2k anyday. Just running CLI, FreeBSD takes up much less memory and it has superior virtual memory management, IMHO.

I'm leaning towards FreeBSD because that's what I have on my other server... and I'm really fond of the OS (well that's what I know better than the other *nixes anyways).

For free, Squid is the best way to go, running on a some kind of Unix variant. It's the benchmark for which all others are measured. The granddaddy of all free proxies.
