"Proxy server connection failed"?

Hey guys, I this HP DV6 laptop running win7 got some viruses and would not allow me to go from site to site on the net, I got rid of the viruses and it started working again but I still ran some more virus scans to make sure and now I can't go to the net. The error message shows as in the title of my post, I am not networking savvy but how can I fix this issue please?
 
Actually, I unchecked the "Use Proxy Server" option in the LAN settings and now the browsing works fine but is this the proper thing to do?
 
Yes, that's normally how you fix it. I had a case where the proxy settings dialog couldn't be changed, even with an administrator account. Never did get that system fully fixed (due to lack of time to work on it).
