Proxy question.

I bought a router, but realized i can't use it. I was using a proxy before and never played games through it because i lived at school. Now i live at home and will play games through a proxy and was wondering will it effect my performance any? I will build my computer later this week and hoping that the proxy server wouldn't slow me down any. The server is a p2-233 with 224mb ram. is this any good? Also, i use analog x proxy server since it is free. I was planning on spending some money to get a real proxy server and was wondering which proxy is the best? Any imput would be appreciated.
