provisional points hearing? *update*

I'm not sure exactly what this is. I got a speeding ticket out of state and have already paid for it so I'm not sure what the point of a hearing is. here are some excerpts from the letter I got:
in view of excessive points assessed againt you for traffic violations under the provisional license statute, you are hereby requested to appear for a hearing at the nearest driver license office within 15 days.

...

should you choose not to appear within the period indicated, an order of suspension or denial of your driving privilege will be issued...
typo

never got one of those... but im presuming its just to make you go there and tell them why you suck at driving.

when i had 3-4 points... they sent me a letter telling me how i'm a negligent driver... which also means i suck at driving... that was 4 years ago though...

hmm. anyone know how many points 98 in a 70 is? I don't remember it saying on the ticket. I'm 17 and I live in utah if it makes any difference.

EDIT: and I got the ticket in kansas.

hmm. oh well.

You've only gotten one ticket? And how long have you had your license? It doesn't matter that the ticket was out of state - you still get the points most of the time.

Why don't you read your driver's manual (not your car manual...)? That would probably tell you. When I got my license, I got a paper that said what happened if I got tickets on my probationary license... IIRC, it was a bad thing to get one ticket in the first year, 2 in the first two years, or 3 in the first 3 years... I'm probably wrong though. This was in NJ though.

yes I've only gotten one ticket. I've had my license for about a year and a half. I know I'm going to get points, I'm just wondering what the point of this "hearing" is.

well I went in for the hearing today. for those who are curious (no one?), the reason I had to come in was because I got 75 points for that ticket and the limit for yougins is 70. I could either take a driving course to get 50 points taken off (can only be done once in three years) or be on probation for a year, meaning I get half of my points taken off if I go a year without getting any tickets and I get my license suspended for a month if I do get another ticket in that time. I chose the second option.
