That's what, about 4x the price? Even being really optimistic, it's not going to be 4x the performance at anything.

The stock advice is of course to buy an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and overclock as desired.

Yes! Dual core will speed up opening windows in firefox, it'll let you run word AND excell at the same time!

Dual core is nice, but the difference is minimal for everything except media encoding and other CPU heavy applications that are SMP capable, games are not part of that category.

Partly correct. You dont need SMP aware software to benefit from multiple cores - just use your imagination. You mentioned some of the possibilities, now combine them.

Games can be and are part of that category.

I used to do this with my buddies a while back;
while most of them proudly ran their P3 350, I built a Celeron300A machine (o/c-ed to 450), and totally spanked them at Quake2.
