Prototype delayed until 2009

May 5, 2008 - Happy Monday: Prototype has been delayed until 2009. Over on GameStop.com, the third-person action title's release date has been bumped from a rosy fall release to April Fools Day 2009.

Could it be that the retail giant is just trying to get a jump on next year's fooling? Sadly, Sierra says no, although the company isn't ready to assign it the April 1st date.

"Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment have made the decision to shift Prototype to launch in 2009," a company spokesperson said. "Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create."

Prototype casts you as Alex Mercer, a man without a memory but with some awesome abilities. A shapeshifter, Mercer will need to consume folks to find the information and superpowers he needs to get to the bottom of his amnesia and what is tearing New York apart.

While I'm not shocked at the reason, I was expecting this out just around the corner with all the gameplay videos they have been putting out for it.

Oh, and as a sidebar, we need to do a "Top 10 Games Featuring A Main Character With Amnesia".

Prototype looks really slick, but I don't need another open world game set in New York City right now 🙂

Yes...it is too bad that Niko doesn't have amnesia though.

I'm not ruling that out yet (from my point in the story), he may have amnesia... he just hides it well... when people ask what happened when he was back home, he never answers them straight.

I'm pretty sure they saw GTA4 and crapped their pants.

considering the only similarities the two games share is its 3rd person and open world i doubt they are worried about GTA4. Prototype looks better graphically and more interesting game play wise than GTA, they probably just wanted to finish.

yeah but the guy behind prototype is talking crap saying how his city is better than GTA IV's is. he is going to have to deliver perfection to back that statement up.

Yep, so far no one has come out with a GTA killer, not even close. Saints row is the closest but still way off.

I really liked Saint's Row 1. They had beeter delay Saint's Row 2 though cuz it looks like crap. I'll get it if the game play is good but most people would ignore it.
