Protocols for Instant Messenger Applications.. they must be out there..

I see applications like SmarterChild and other AIM-operated programs, as well as gAIM and other linux clients that are not made by AOL. I'd like to make a simple program that utilyzes the AIM protocol but where would i start? Is there some kind of protocol specification or even just some resources out there for the AIM protocol? Even the source code for gAIM might be useful so i can see how it is written. Can anyone point my towards any resources?
