Protein -- or horrible shriveled death!?

I have a friend that swears I do not eat enough protein and will die a horrible shriveled death.

I cannot seem to find adequate information about what the percentage of carb/fat/proteins should be for a young woman that is NOT trying to lose or gain weight and is doing moderate exercise. Does anyone have any well-founded ideas? Right now, I think I am eating about 15% fat, 22% protein and the rest carbs (mostly complex). I don't eat meat, chicken or fish. That doesn't seem low to me -- but I hope someone has a more conclusive answer.

You're supposed to be sleeping ;) Don't feel sorry -- it's been over 15 years and I don't miss it a bit :) And no, I do not freak out when people eat meat, roll my eyes, or give long speeches about it. But give me advice. I want something solid I can use to assess this situation.

I still can't believe that you live in Hawaii and don't eat any fish. :)

ok.. ok.. I should go to sleep. :p

BTW, my understanding of biology is very shallow, but aren't you lacking certain types of proteins that are only found in meat products? Perhaps you can substitute your protein source from beans.

ugh, i find it surprising that you took on a vegan diet without adequet education or guidance. it is challenging to say to least to truely get everything you really need without taking suppliments. as for protiens, no plant has everything, you must find complimentary sources or be malnourished.

some things u can go without for years...but if your doing this for your health...:p take b-12 for example. you can store enough for 4 years.. but after that ..nerve damage, brain function decrease etc. it only occurs natually in animal foods. sure you can get it from fortified stuff, but it helps to know such things;) kind of explains why some vegans are nutty;)

and frankly, guys don't like girls that don't eat meat ;)

I am not a vegan, and I get more than adequate vitamins and minerals through my diet, includin B-12, biotin, thiamine etc. Legumes and dairy products are one of the best sources for this. I think I eat quite a lot of protein, but I want some solid figures because according to what I am reading a "healthy" diet is approx 30% fat and then carbs with varying specific protein recommendations. I see all sorts of numbers for how much protein one should be eating, some rather extreme. Most of all I really want to shut up this deranged friend who lives off off fatty cheeses and McFood.

As for "live meat", sure I'll bite (gently) ;)

Doesn't anyone here know anything about these ratios? Or is the female body a TOTAL mystery to you ;)

why would this be true? it's such an irrelevant factor to friendship/relationships with girls. myself, i'm a vegetarian and i prefer girls that are too. nothing like kissing a girl after dinner and getting a big mouthfull of meat taste. :disgust:

22%, if that is what you are getting since you do not eat meats, is plenty, IF your overall calories are adequate to support your lifestyle. If your calories are too low, then your protein, as well as fat and carb intake may be too low. I would calculate that first.

Do you take in protein supplements, like powders or is it from legumes and peanuts?

Sure proteins that come from different sources are different, but one is not necessarily better than another. A well rounded intake of protein is optimal, but not life-giving.

Nefrodite: I got your joke about the girls eating meat, even though it obviously flew right over a few people's heads. :D

women need more protein than men of the same weight/activity level because they lose it (along with their minds) according to some obscure timing born in pre-history. i don't know exact numbers but i think you're below the govt's recommended intake %. (you can calculate the actual figures by comparing calories from fat vs calories from carbs and their percent recommended intake level on a product and then just fill in the rest with protein, i think its 30%)

Beef, chicken, and fish are all very very good. I was gonna say meat, but most people here have at least a pituitary in the gutter if not their entire mind.

Just eat nuts (peanuts, peanut butter etc., calm down boys, don't go there) or soy products which contains as much or more protein than meat.
