Protection Plans

I'm headed to Circuit City after to work to buy my new Canon A80! One question though... does anyone ever get the protection plan offered from the store? Is there any real reason to get it?

I got the extended warranty from Futureshop and the salesman flat out lied to me to get me to buy it...so if you do get one...read the pamphlet and ignore his bullsh!t...

REPLACEMENT plans are typically fine on high-use stuff (game-consoles, phones, etc..) as its very simple to convince BB or CC that the item no longer works like "brand new". Say the phone has static, the controllers don't work, etc...they have to replace the whole thing with a gift-cert of the original price.

So buy a console now, 2 years from now get that money back to buy a new console.

Service stuff, I'd say no except on stuff that pays for itself (sometimes they include another battery on camcorders), big TVs as well...

But replacement is typically fine I'd say. And I've worked at BB and CC.

I paid $60 for a replacement plan on a $700 digital camera (G2 when it first came out), a year later it crapped out on me. Got a free upgrade to a G3.

I was happy I went with the plan.

Depends on the item... I got it for my A80 for what I think is a decent cost, something like 20/year for 2 or 3 yrs, cant remember... just cuz you never know when you are going to drop it or spill something on it. Make sure you read the fine print, some types of "accidents" sometimes are not covered.

I haven't yet at any B&M stores, but I extended my laptop's service plan when I bought it from HP earlier this year. Come to find out after the fact that my credit card doubles the warranty so I have four years of warranty on this thing, haha. I suppose it's possible I'll still be using this laptop four years from now, but it's nice to know that the years are there should I need them. I've never bought anything worthy of a service plan at Best Buy or Circuit City but if I bought a fridge or dishwasher or large TV, I would get a plan along with it, no doubt.

I bought them on the last two phones I bought (batteries are expensive). Other then that I usually don't. Maybe when I get a HDTV or something......

no, but i'm planning on getting one from best buy when I buy an ipod. 4 years for $40 is a really good deal in this case.
