Protecting Data on USB Key

I just lost my 1GB USB key.🙁
It contains my school projects and work projects.

In cases like these, how can we protect the data inside a USB key? Is there a good encription software that can be used on USB key without installing it on all computers that I use the USB key with. 😱

Since you are going to have to buy another flash drive, I have seen some that are fingerprint protected, which sounds like a good idea to me.

I have one like that - and it works very well. The fingerprint opens access to the "non-public" virtual drive, and then in that, you can also encrypt the data for added security.

I've got a 2GB Lexar Jump Drive II Secure which has built in software which lets you password protect and encrypt either part of, or the entire drive. That way if I loose it at least know one can look at what I have on there...

I was actually looking at getting one of them, but they are kinda expensive.

Yep! It did cost a bit, but I use it for an access key to several computers as well, and it is good to have for overseas travel. And, it does have a "backup" finger. You can actually program 5 fingers, and a backup beyond that of a complex password.

Good, so you could program toes in case you lose a hand (or two). Actually, toes would be much more secure because we generally don't leave their prints all over ze place.

What brand do you have? We tried some out at work and they were pretty bad.
