Protecting against Power Surges

So the power goes out at random about 2-3 times a month in my apartment complex. It is very old and I am in Southern Cali....*cough* hell pit of the world *cough*

I can't seem to find ANY information about surge protectors on Anandtech which seems very odd to me.

I found one thread that pointed to a surge protector costing 10$ from Circuit City right now on a special. I was just wondering if this is any good or if any of you could point me in a better direction.

Circuit City Surge Protector

Thanks again fellow Anadtechers!!

Wow thats a good deal. I currently use a CyberPower protector and it works great. Not sure about that model, though, but mine cost about as much as the 'original' price. Plus I think CyberPower has a policy where if the protector fails to block a surge that fries your system, they will pay for damages or something like that. I think it depends on model or something, I didn't read much into it.

You definitely need to look into a UPS for the computer and a if possible, have your landlord look into whole-house surge protector for everything else. I've heard of electric companies installing them for free or dirt cheap.

I've been using CyberPower UPS'es for over 7 years and have had exceptional results. Hook up the USB cable and install the monitoring software so that it will shut your pc down after a set period of time when it's running on battery backup power. They also come with a 3 year warranty and their RMA process is respectable.
