I'm trying to fix my friend's computer. Whenever she boots, it stays at a black screen when it gets past the loading logo. When I try to boot into safe mode, it gets stuck at mup.sys.
I was just going to do a format, but she really needs data that's on the drive. When I plugged the drive into my PC, I could see the drive fine and open up most of the files on the drive. The only problem came when I tried to access C:/Windows/Documents and Settings/users/Kristen (or whatever the path is to a specific user's My Documents folder). When I tried to do anything with the folder it said "Access Denied". I had never seen a message like that before, so I'm not sure what it was. Is it encrypted?
Does this mean that if I do a windows repair, the files in that folder will no longer be readable on any PC?
Any suggestions on how to back up this file? Thanks!
PS. I already tried doing a chkdsk /r. It found errors and repaired them, but still no luck.
Thanks!
