I'm in the same boat... small/light/long battery, built like a tank, great keyboard... seems like a nice laptop! I'm between the T400 and the X200.

Here are some pros/cons about the X200 that I can come up with:

Pros:
- Weight - even with the 9 cell battery, it's very light.
- Size - small, easy to grab, easy to fit on a cramped desk.
- Keyboard - full sized T series keyboard. Huge bonus here.
- Build quality - it'll survive some drops, squeezed between textbooks, some spills, etc.
- Battery life - with the 9 cell battery, you get like 9 hours ish. Awesome.
- DDR3
- Webcam (subjective)
- LED to illuminate the keyboard

Cons:
- No optical drive. This is subjective.
- No trackpad. This is CRUCIAL for some people.
- 1280x800 resolution (some people want the X200s's 1440x900 resolution maybe?)
- As of writing this, no proper Linux support.
- Price (compared to T400?)
- Graphics (integrated - subjective)

As for me, the only reason why I haven't already purchased one is the lack of a trackpad. I'm not sure if I'll like the trackpoint... Maybe someone can share their experiences with the trackpoint?

Consider the X200s? :) The X200s is freaking light! I have a X40, which is 2.7lb and that is light, but the X200s is 2.4lb! Most of the 'netbooks' are even heavier than that and provide less.

If you guys haven't tried the trackpoint, you'll love it after a couple of days/weeks. I will sometimes find myself trying to use the 'trackpoint' on other laptops even though they don't have one. It's just much easier to use, you never have to lift up your finger since you won't run out of 'gliding' space as you would on a trackpad. On a trackpad you glide your finger, lift and repeat until you get to where you want to go (unless it's super sensitive and you're super accurate).

I have Thinkpad X22, X40, X61t (tablet) and T42p.

some quick questions:

1. what is the diff between the: [[5-1 media card reader]] AND the [[3 in 1 media card reader]]
2. does the package come with any sort of carry case? my friends Ideapad came with a sleek sleeve to carry it in. edit. it does not come with any carry case. which carry case are u guys using with it?
3. what is the Intel Turbo Memory for $40 as an upgrade? does it actually provide any benefit? where?
4. What are the differences between the different wireless options:

Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters
ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III
Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) [add $24.00 $16.00]
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN) [add $44.00 $32.00]

I've been using one for a couple weeks now.
p8600, 2gig ram, 2gig intel turbo, 160gig 5400rpm, 5300agn wifi link, 6cell battery

Indoors the screen is usable even at lowest setting.
I've only tried using it once outside, but it was in the shade...I don't know if that counts? If you'd like me to do some tests outdoors I can.

It gets great battery life (the 6 cell is flush with the laptop). I haven't actually measured, but 70% battery life lasted me all day yesterday. It is PERFECT for the tasks I use it for (internet/powerpoint/word/watching some t.v. shows).

My last laptop was a toshiba monster from many years ago, 15in power user laptop...the things I remember most were how hot it got and the fan noise.

This laptop does not get hot, it does not make noise. I have to put the fan exhaust to my ear to hear anything.

I like the all black design. I have to get something to clean the lid though, fingerprints show up on it, kinda makes it look dirty.

I just got a 13in neoprene sleeve from frys, works fine and I put it in my messenger bag.
On a clean install of vista ultimate it is quite snappy even in battery conserve mode.

I had never owned a lenovo/ibm thinkpad keyboard before. Every good thing you heard about it is true.

The intel turbo memory supposedly provides for faster bootups/program starts, it's used as like a 2gig cache. Maybe this is why performance seems so snappy even in battery conserve mode? I haven't measured startup time b/c I just perpetually have the laptop in sleep mode if I'm not using it. Just a note though, if you use/want xp there's no turbo memory driver.

I don't know all the differences between the wifi options, but I believe the difference between 5100/5300 is the number of antennas (3 to 2 I believe).

I don't know the difference between the media card readers, I'm sure you could find that out in a review. I know one option (the option I have) comes with a modem port and the other one doesn't. I don't use a media card reader so it hasn't come up for me...

The no dvd drive hasn't come up except when I wanted to do a clean install (and you WILL want to do a clean install, night/day difference in my opinion). I ended up buying a refurb external dvdrw online...only place I could find it for cheap. I tried doing the usb key method, but it didn't work for me.

I loved the trackpoint right away. I'm a righty, and I use my ring finger to control movement and then my thumb can press the scroll button. It's much more seamless in my opinion to go from using the trackpoint to typing and vice versa than using a pad.

The computer is light, of course my last one again was a desktop replacement, so anything will seem light and small. It's smaller than you expect. Personally, I would rather have the x200 than the x200s. The performance for an ultra portable is awesome and unless you really really need that extra battery life/lower weight...meh. I'd rather just get the 9cell battery. Again though, this is coming from someone who used to lug around a 7-8 lbs laptop.

Sound isn't bad for a 1 speaker on the bottom of the laptop haha. Get headphones if you want to make noises.

I'm trying to think of anything else...I dunno if it's a common feature these days, but there's a keyboard light that you can use in dark rooms...comes in handy. I think that's all I got. I honestly could not be happier with this laptop. I would also find someone from Ohio State or another university who has a deal with lenovo b/c I got 35% off mine.

There seems to be several thinkpad/lenovo forums as well, in case you need support.

Just try out the trackpoint for a while. If you give up on it too early, you'll always want to rely on a mouse. Unless you're planning on gaming...

If you travel with it, get a sleeve for it. Then you'll never have to worry about scratches or dirt. Check out waterfield sleeve. www.sfbags.com They have custom sizes for laptops, so it'll be a perfect fit.

I'll stick to the full size T series keyboard that's on the laptop already...

Oh and if you look at my previous post, I did actually end up buying the X200 (configured as shown). My estimated ship date is 10-8-08... I'll be sure to throw together a mini review :D

my est ship date is 10/9/08, a day after you. lets race to see who gets it first. they're usually very conservative with that date.

what SLEEVE are you going to use with it? i'm looking at the "Built NY 12in sleeve" that looks like an hourglass for about $30

About the sleeve: one of the major reasons why I went with a Thinkpad is so that I DON'T have to baby the machine. ;)

I have an x61s so I can give some input into what having a small ibm/lenovo laptop

Cons:
- No optical drive. This is subjective.
= Its a total exception when you need one, only situation where I might need one is for creating a recovery disk for truecrypt, otherwise a second computer and usb sticks or network access does everything.

- No trackpad. This is CRUCIAL for some people.
= Thought so at first as well but the thumbtackthing on the lenovos is awsome

- 1280x800 resolution (some people want the X200s's 1440x900 resolution maybe?)
= mine has 1024x768 and its often limiting, but you learn to live with it, you can focus on one thing a at a time :) would want more resolution .. realy realy

- As of writing this, no proper Linux support.
= cant comment, thinking about installing some version of it

- Price (compared to T400?)
= for a small powerful laptop the x200 is rahter cheap

- Graphics (integrated - subjective)
= if you plan on gaming then you are barking up the wrong tree

Not literally, but yea pretty much. My backpack has a "laptop compartment" so to speak. I plan on just plopping the machine into it and GO GO GO like i stole the thing.

I just built an image for an x200s at work. It's a quick little computer. I have never been a fan of the point stick thing, and that is a big strike against this unit for me.
The build quality is good.
However, the docking station and laptop fit could be a lot better. I thought somethign was wrong with the original dock and laptop and had them replaced by lenovo because of the sloppy fit, but the new ones are the same. Terrible. I do like that the dock can accomidate a 2nd battery externally. Performance wise, it is pretty good once you take all the bloatware off of it. The screen is good and the keyboard has a good feel. IF they can get the track pad on a netbook, they could have gotten it on this.

Gee... I wonder why it doesn't work.... maybe because this thread is 6 months old.
