So why is it acceptable to push a shopping cart in a grocery store but its not okay when you're on the street?
Because its a shopping cart, not a street cart
Its only called a shopping cart because that's its main purpose. Its really a wheelbarrow if you think about it.
it would need larger/wider tires to roll effectively on turf
Aftermarket (pun intended)
you mean like spinners and a wing? cool
Don't forget the Ginzu knife!

the username and the quote are actually separated making it hard to read who actually said what. Therefore, I propose instead that the quote system work like this:

That's a dumb idea, unless you can continue to make them nested, then it's cool. But year, suggestions go somewhere else. :p

You need nested quotes to be able to respond to something while including the context (ie, that they had quoted someone else in their response). Otherwise it's impossible to differentiate between a quote containing a nested quote and two separate quotes.

The 'solution' here is that people need to trim their responses so that only the part they care about is actually quoted. If they're quoting a complex conversation, there's really no way around it without destroying the context. In the example you quoted, the posters should have just 'replied', rather than quoting the whole conversation to add a one-liner at the end.

Edit:

Having thought about this a little more, I had a different idea that might be more workable. In addition to 'Reply' and 'Quote', you could have a 'Quote One Level' button that would only give one level of quoting, and replace any nested quotes with a message saying a nested quote had been skipped. You could even generalize it so that you could specify how many levels of nested quotes to keep. So if you replied to the mess of nested quotes you gave above, it would look like:

Man, this thread is lame.

Personally I'd like to see nested quotoes go away completely, alot of other forums dont do it they only quote a single message.

Yes, Jason. Make automatic nesting of quotes go away completely. Please. You can do it. I believe in you!

People (neffers) tend to make a mess out of threads with the automatic quote function. The page width gets screwed up, and I must scroll from side to side for every line. Many times, I simply give up on reading a thread when that happens.

The quote button could be set up to allow one, perhaps two, level of quotes, and if somebody wants to nest more quotes, they've got to take the time to do it by hand.

The "Quote" button needs to strip out every quote from the message you click "Quote" on.

This needs to happen with the Quote button is clicked...NOT when you try to post. There are occasions I require putting multiple quotes and/or nested quotes, but it's on an as-needed basis - and the general nefs won't do that.

It works well on other forums, it will hopefully appear here (and it will be an upgrade which is welcomed for a change! ;))

I wonder who around here can make that happen? Let me think on that a while.....
